I think this is correct. I think Linus did mention that this was more of a passion project and to see if this could actually be practically done.

Is it the motherboard that allows this system to run two power supplies? Building a really power hungry workstation/rendering system and my 1600w isn't going to cut it.

Its listed in video description. And said couple times in the video series. As for pricing, the video is 2 years old, so you need to do your own digging to find what parts costed 2 years ago, about the rime when this was made. Isn't that what school projects are for? For you to do your own research on topic you are interested in? Thats what they were back when I was in school.
