Making sure if this is a solid enough build

Alien51

So far this is what I have selected for my friend. He wants to build a gaming/entertainment computer but he doesn't know how to do much besides turning on the computer and install stuff. He often compares to my build and wants something similar to it, but my build is built to be powerful because I use it for other outrageous things. So I want to make things a bit full proof for as little as possible in a decent starting build. I plan of giving him my 2 gtx 970 to sli so he can save up to buy a better card. I'm a bit unsure, if I should suggest him a full atx tower in case he decides to change the mb? Some things he will upgrade in the future: MB, CPU Cooler, Graphic Card.

I told him it would cost around $750 usd to $900 usd. I'm thinking since he have a decent cpu there isn't anything much for him to change besides the MB and graphic cards if he really wants to upgrade it. I probably could save more by getting a core without the overclock but I sort of want to have the ability to amp up the core down the line for him if he decides to upgrade the cooler. He hasn't decided on a monitor yet and might stick to a tv until he can get one. Not much to decide for peripherals since I will also give him a windows 10 pro because I have one laying around. The reason I chose a 1tb m.2 is to make it simple for him because he won't understand how to install and access a game in another drive.

Why are we doing a 3-4 generation old system brand new? Your looking at spending $450 on an outdated CPU with only an integrated GPU, and that's just not a good value. If we can push it to $900, I'll throw something together on pcp quick.

True could use a more up to date and better cpu. $300 for the cpu was a bit on the expensive side for him. I would push for $900 for him as well but he's already kind of squirming at the price tag.

This will beat the pants off that system, even with a donated GTX 970(and SLI is rubbish) for the same money, we could absolutely push it up to $900, but for value, this is in a really nice niche. Could use a few more dollars for case to get some more quality, but it's a place to start.

The cpu is three generations out of date. The OP build needs a fair bit of work.

Consider getting a current generation cpu and motherboard. The aio is there as much for the additional airflow (case only comes with one fan) as the good job it does cooling the cpu.

So the 9900K is SO POWERFUL that the iGPU included is going to provide better FPS than a midrange CPU and an RX 580?

Lol

Here are a few ideas:

  • 07/07 the 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs will drop. The 3600 is going to be a very solid launch price for great performance. I am expecting them to keep up with 7th gen Intel if not beat it outright.
  • 1660Ti is a huge step up from the GTX 970, and fits well within your original posted pricing.
  • An RTX 2060 could be had within the $900 budget range, and at about $950 you could fit a nice RTX 2070 which will provide larger improvements to performance than a CPU upgrade.
    • Sensible build, similar price to the OP. A solid upgrade in performance.

a pair of 970s that he can't SLI cuz you didn't get a board that supports it.

Some of these are quite a nice build, but I talked with him and he wants to keep it within $800. Also to settle something about the 970's, he wants to keep that until he can save up for an RTX 2080 or 2080Ti. It also free up about $100 to $300 of budget he can use on other things. So I5 9600k might be a good idea or ryzen 5 2600.

The 970 will be a serious weak point in the system until he's able to replace it, but this is a solid system.

If SLI is the goal, this MOBO will need to be swapped out. Something like the Extreme 4 would just about fit the budget. But with current SLI support, it's more worth it to just rock a single GPU.

If he wants to go the Zen 2 route, which I think may be a solid choice as we see more data, here's a 3700X build:

I think either option is a solid base for whatever GPU he upgrades to in the future.
