4790k to 9900k

Im kicking around the idea of upgrading my 4790k. Ill need a whole new motherboard, ram and cpu cooler as well. Ill probably replace my 5 year old power supply too. So basically a near total build.

If im gonna do all that i figured id splurge on the best gaming cpu i can get, otherwise its not worth an upgrade. People throw down 750 to $1500 on a gpu these days so spending a hundred more for a better cpu seems like a drop in the bucket by comparison, and cpus are generally more future proof than gpus. I was gonna wait for ryzen 3000 but the price difference wouldnt be that great for a 3800x and performance of the ryzen would probably be a little less in games.

Any reason not to get a 9900k? Should i even upgrade? Im about 50/50 on the idea at the moment. Would i see a difference in say battlefield 1 and 5 at 1440p?

If i just upgraded my 1070ti instead i feel like my cpu would bottleneck in cpu intensive games. I can always lower graphics details to compensate for my gpu, but an aging cpu doesnt have any easy settings solution in multiplayer.

The 4790k is quite weak, no reason to keep it.

Could jump on the and train and hope it pans out with a nice card. Won’t be leaving intel anytime soon with my stuff. Though I kinda wish I got the 9700k or higher compared to this 8700k.

Questions:

1) Are you dissatisfied with your current gaming performance (too much stutter, want higher graphics fidelity, want a higher frame rate)?

2) What is the refresh rate and resolution of your current monitor?

My thoughts regardless of your response:

High end Ryzen 3000 may actually be faster than the 9900k in generic gaming. We don't know either way right now. The Zen 2 CPUs release in less than 4 weeks. Lots of reviews will be released on launch day and more thorough independent reviews will likely release 3-7 days after launch.

Even if top tier Ryzen 3000 CPUs aren't faster than the 9900k Intel will still be forced to lower prices significantly due to increased competition (probably ~$50-100 off current 9900k prices).

You mentioned future proofing. More cores = more better since game engines will continue to utilize more cores as time passes. Ryzen 3000 will have up to 50% more cores compared to the 9900k at launch on July 7th (100% more cores whenever the 3950X launches in August/September/whenever).

I've already started speculating. More speculation won't help at this point. It would be a bad idea not to wait since the Zen 2 launch is so close and you already have a decent gaming rig. If you do a lot work on your computer and you make A LOT of money that way that may change this conclusion.

It's definitely not weak. It falls into the mid-range category now.

A 9700k is better than a 4790k and 8700k, so I don't know what you're talking about.

@maizenblue If you're going to upgrade, wait for Zen 2. It's a much better offer.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

Mid range is weak. How about moderately weak. Sub performance. Half ass, subpar. What ever term you want.

It's roughly tied for the 2nd best gaming CPU slot with the 9700K.  The 9900K beats it but nothing AMD has does "yet".

Can't see it slipping out out of the top 5 even after July 7.

Says a lot about cpus then. In what perfect world scenario would it place second in anything?
