In a recent interview with German site t3n, Mozilla CEO Chris Beard confirmed that Mozilla is currently in the process of implementing a premium subscription model for Firefox. Current plans include an integrated VPN solution and potentially secure cloud storage.

We also tested VPN. We can tell if you're on a public Wi-Fi network and want to do online banking and say, "Wow, you really should use VPN." You can imagine we'll offer a solution that gives us all a certain amount of free VPN Bandwidth and then offer a premium level over a monthly subscription. We want to add more subscription services to our mix and focus more on the relationship with the user to become more resilient in business issues.

The stated motivation is to diversify their revenue streams, which is probably a good thing since, according to Beard, 90% of their revenue comes from search deals with Google, their main competitor.

We are working on three sources of income and we want to rebalance them: We have Search, but we also make content. We have a company called Pocket that discovers and curates content. There is also sponsored content. This is the content business.

t3n: How much of your sales is coming from search business and how much from Pocket?
Roughly 90 percent come from the search.

Beard reiterated that there are no plans to strip down or remove the currently available free edition of Firefox.

So, what we want to clarify is that there is no plan to charge money for things that are now free. So we will roll out a subscription service and offer a premium level. And the plan is to introduce the first one this year, towards fall. We aim for October.

Personally, I don't really care about any of those premium features, but as long as Firefox remains free and Mozilla gets more money, everyone wins.

It would be rather hard to charge for "standard" FireFox since it is open source.  They've long had services, just not pushed them, and I support this method of offering some to better support FireFox development.

Damn, sub based web browser. I get the benefits and all, kinda sad in a way it's needed per say as an option, bit also really not a fan everything going sub based.

More precisely not yet. Im sure later bit by bit they gonna put already existing  features behind a paywall....

As long as they don't actively push their premium services in an extremely annoying way that cannot be disabled or start locking out features that were free in the premium model, like Browser Themes/skins... I'm ok with it.

Just imagine getting popups / notifications all the time saying crap like "Hey, you should consider using a VPN! Switch to Firefox Premium to access our fast VPN designed for Firefox!".

As long as they stay true to their word of not removing features from the free version, then looks like I got scared for nothing.

this is fine, i dont mind there being a premium option as long as they dont spam me with notifications about it

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Then you have brave which is more secure than Firefox and pays you to use it lol. I have made over $40 since I have started using it. It’s plain dumb not to use it

I had a feeling something like this was going to happen.

 

As much as I hate paying for everything nowadays, I might actually pay for Firefox. It's a great project that's served me well over the years, and I do want to support them, especially in light of them being the only notable competitor to Google.

Brave has been a thing for many years. It just now implemented the payment system which isn’t really sketchy and the whole point is to benefit people like content creators. Brave is also open source so there is transparency

According to them, it is only VPN (possibly Proton?) and cloud storage. If they started charging and removing functions the community would destroy them since all of it is based on "trust". Not saying they don't want to do it, even though I'm pretty sure they don't, but more like they won't do it.

90% of their revenue is from Google so I'm behind everything that removes them from Google.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

This is the prime concern. Google is decapitating themselves by crippling ad blockers, Mozilla doesn't really need to cut off their foot right now.

Love brave especially their mobile browser which is pretty great too.  Has everything I need built in with script and ad blockers easy to turn off at will.

There's only one problem with this, it won't be long until all browsers implement subscription models and I doubt Google or Microsoft will be as generous as Mozilla.

 

$1 per tab anyone (yes I know that's extreme but it's still a valid point).

Brave rewards through a Crypto coin. It takes effort to cash out but hey, nothing is entirely free. Brave is just a better browser than Chrome from using it. For one, it has picture in picture.
