F@H and BOINC Badge Request Thread [Last Update: 2024-APR-13]

Message added by TVwazhere

Note that for F@H and BOINC, the points that you've earned must be for the LTT team. For example: If you have 20 million points for the default F@H team and 5 million points for LTT, we cannot award you a Bronze Contributor badge. Additionally, badges supersede each other meaning when you hit 25 million points, your Contributor Badge becomes a Bronze Badge, you only get one and they do not stack on your profile. Badges for different disciplines such as Folding, BOINC, and Event participations will show your highest rank in each category.

Posts requesting badges will be hidden when the badge is assigned. Check your profile to see if you have the badge before reposting.

Hey folks I have a proposal. How about we replace the current badges or create new badges with number or work units as criteria?

Reasoning is very simple. Look at my stats below. I started folding in 2020 with a laptop at the time. I spent more than 1 year folding 24/7 and did 3,600 work units.

Now I’ve returned and in 2 months I got as many points as I got in the whole 1.5 years, with only 550 WUs. The fact is that I haven’t nearly donated the amount of time and resources as I previously have donated.

So I think we should add a minimum amount of work units as a criteria in the badge system. Or create new badges for number of work units computed.

Thoughts?

The points required for a badge are usually updated fairly frequently. I believe the only reason the badge requirements are so low currently are due to the fact that electricity is extremely expensive for some people.

Changing the amount or points for a badge is not enough imho: It just depends on what the badge to reward for: if it is to show the amount of time donated than points is not enough. If it is to show the amount of computational processing capacity donated than it’s ok. The point is someone with 1 4090 will win in a day what someone donating a cpu for 1 month will not get it, but the amount of work units will be more similar.

The original Member badge was a 24WU requirement, which was changed due to laughably easy requirement. The decision was changed to be point based to better align with how most users fold now; with GPU's rather than with CPU's. CPU WU's notably give less points than GPU, hence the discrepancy in how many points you got in a certain time compared to WU's completed. In some cases, folders with powerful GPU's (3000+ series) were actually completing the previous Bronze requirement (1M Points) before they finished 24 WU's!

  1. The points have only been updated once, officially. Badges have been added over time but only once in 2021 were the badge point requirements updated.
  2. The badge requirements for the first two are low not because of electricity costs, but because most people do not fold with the highest end CPU's/GPU's (anything Pascal and lower does not get very high PPD compared to turning and newer, not to mention anything AMD) They just donate whatever they have laying around. Some people buy and build entire ultra powerful PC's with brand new hardware just to fold, but these are the top 1% of the F@H leaderboards. Many people like robertobsc have a laptop laying around doing nothing, so they just use that.

At this point there is no plans on changing the Badge requirements to a WU threshold.  Remember; these badges are for fun, and while they may be a bit pay to "win", the only benefactor from all of this is science and research.

Yeah, I basically was in both sides of the spectrum. Now I have a rtx4070 and 2080 ti running, giving me ~12 million ppd. I’ll reach gold in the next month. Those badge rewards are so simple but also fun to reach. So I was trying to think in ways that to be more challenging for high end tech folders but also be more reachable for low end ones.
