Is a 1000w power supply worth it in this context?

Yesterday i was picking up parts for a rather strong build for this friend of mine.

One thing he was hellbent on having a power supply just like mine (Tt Toughpower with RGB) and asked if i would sell it to him for a small discount, can do, since i was already thinking about cleaning up the lighting pattern on this build.

After settling up the deal i went to look for my new power supply, i ended up finding some really good prices on 1000w models, about US$10 more expensive as comparable (in quality) 650w and 550w models, such as:

1- Cooler Master V1000

2- Corsair RM1000X

3- EVGA Supernova 1000 G3

 

In this context, is it a better ideia picking one of the above instead of taking a smaller model for almost the same price?

What are the system specs?  Unless you are running 2 Vega 64 or something, you probably don't need teh 1000W PSU.

Its in my signature and profile, it barely uses 500w.

I really don't need it, its just for the opportunity of having one of those.

1000 watt PSU is overkill.

 

Just grab a high quality 600-650watt.

 

Like an RMX650, Pure Power 11/10 600watt, Supernova G2 (not G3, G3 isnt great).

I'd go with 2 or 3 on this list if the pricing is the same.  I have both an EVGA (T2 not G3) and Corsair RMi750 in systems and they have both been 100% bulletproof.

Yep, even when the CPU is OCed it doesn't take a lot of raw power.

1 and 3 are the same price, 2 is about US$10 cheaper, on par with 650w units of the same rating.

Because all of those 3 PSUs lack multi rail, you get a less safe PSU if you pick a higher wattage one. So either get a lower wattage one, or one that has multi rail.

With 650w i have quite a bit of headroom already, 1000w would be a massive headroom.

The low price is likely the stores buying too many, expecting miners to buy them all. And they're now selling them for a lower price.

That reasoning turned out to be utter nonsense as many high tier psu:s(G2 has the exact same thing a bit worse) have same so called problems. Just read reviews from experts and if they score a 100$ psu well it should be just fine.

 

The hatred towards G3 here comes from a misunderstood review by Tomshardware. Its pretty much on the basis that one psu broke down when reviewed, you dont have a line of psus where none break down so that should not be a strike against just one psu model. Same should be applied to any psu that has been known to break at least once.

No, not at all.

 

You don't need a 1,000W PSU.

 

A 550W would be enough, but if you want some headroom for the future then a 650W or 750W is fine.

Closer to 50%. 80+ Bronze or higher certification has a higher efficiency requirement at the 50% mark than 20% or 100%, and that's what the bell curves usually replicate.

Safety wise, no. The differences would come down to warranty, available connectors, noise, and rated efficiency.
