"Gaming" chair squeaking.. help save me

K i a r a

Hey

So, About half a year ago, around that I bought a "gaming chair" for around 200CAD (250USD)
Its no fancy brand or anything, but I still went for it, the main reason was I could remove the arms of the chair so it could be pushed into my desk closer, But this is beside the point.

The real issue I am having is the squeaking of the chair.. with almost ANY movement the thing squeaks... with the main movement when you lean back in the chair (not reclining just leaning to the back of the chiar.. or leaning forward...)

ANY suggestions on how to fix this, I do have WD-40 But i have no clue where I should be spraying it.

thanks

WD-40 isn't a a grease. It stands for Water Displacement - 40(th formula). You can put some WD-40 to see if the squeaks go away, but it would be temporary, and I would expect the squeaking to come back. Try it with some WD-40. If the squeaking comes back, get some real grease.

In my experience this is typical of most chairs after a while, not necessarily with any correlation to price.  I'm currently using a $90 IKEA chair that feels more solid and premium than anything I've had previously despite this also being my cheapest one yet.  I also look for chairs without arms, or at least with removable arms, partly for the reason you mentioned, but party just because I don't use them and they would get in the way.  I know you're not shopping for a new one at this time but just some tips to keep in mind.  Hopefully you can fix the squeek.  My advise would be to listen around the frame for the source then inject the problem area with a lot and hope for the best.  It may take a few movements to let it really get in there though.  If you can't find the source by ear, I'd just target anywhere two pieces of metal touch - screws, plates, hinges, etc.  One solid piece of metal isn't going to squeek, it must be cause by it rubbing on something else.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

WD40 sucks for lubrication, and it can ruin rubbers. I would use penetrating oil, or seweing machine oil. On larger joints you can use bearing grease. Simply lubricate all joints on this chair. Be careful not to make a mess.

On every joints it has. Just shoot them all with WD40

  • 2 years later...

you may also try something like superlube, it is a very good lubricant, it is quite thin tho so consider that, if that dosent work using some sort of grease might be your best bet, or using a bit of motor oil
