Apple Watch has another record quarter as Wearable market hits $5.1Billion

Apple Watch continues to perform extremely well for Apple:

During Apple’s Q2 2019 earnings call, both Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri touted the success of Apple Watch during the quarter, revealing that three-quarters of Apple Watch sales are to first-time buyers.

With almost all Apple Watch customers being first time buyers, it's obvious that Apple has managed to get the marketing behind Apple Watch done right. Providing useful, practical, and desirable features in a hardware package that looks great.

Apple says that the second quarter of 2019 marks the best non-holiday quarter ever for Apple Watch. In total, Apple’s wearables, home, and accessories category set a new March quarter record with $5.1 billion in revenue. That’s up from $3.94 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Because Apple Watch is bundled up along with home and accessories it's not that clear how much of the revenue bump is just from Apple Watch, but it is safe to say that AirPods, which is bundled under accessories (don't quote me on that) also played a role. 

 

Keep in mind through, that Apple Watch is the best selling watch. Period.

Tim Cook said during the call that this makes Apple’s wearables business the size of a Fortune 200 company on its own. Meanwhile, Luca Maestri touted that wearables sales were up 50 percent year-over-year.

Apple does not release exact sales figures for Apple Watch, like most of their other products. But if Luca is to be believed, Apple Watch sales significantly increased. Most likely thanks to the release of the Series 4 Apple Watch and the price reduction to the previous Series 3 model. 

 

I am the owner of a Series 2 and I love the thing. Even for the second generation of Apple Watch I can get 2 days of battery life. I love the water resistance down to 50m of water, fitness tracking, and proximity authentication features integrated with the Mac. I also appreciate that Apple Watch is also a glorified iPod (w/ optional cellular now) when paired with wireless headphones.

 

Newer models have even more attractive health features like fall detection (extremely important and helpful for the elderly community), the ability to perform an ECG, as well as monitor your heart rate for irregularities. Apple Watch was conceived as a health wearable first, and it has fallen into that roll extremely well in its 4th iteration.

I would certainly buy a Series 3 to go along with my iPhone 8 Plus, but I already have a Moto 360 running Android Wear OS 2.0, so it's not really worth the trade.

 

I like the idea of wearables as a quality of life item to pair with a traditional smartphone, and it's impressive to see the Apple Watch doing so well.

I have been using mine everyday since the series 3 came out. Truly a great watch that easily lasts 5 days. Looking to upgrade to the 5 when that comes out as the battery degradation has made 5 days turn to 4 or 3ish depending on GPS usage.

It depends on what you do and how many notifications you get. Also if you use the power saving feature responsibly, like when you sleep, you can extend the battery life significantly.

I just turn off everything I don't need. A lot of background refresh is on be default and some apps like the weather don't actually need it or location data using the GPS

Despite its AHA certification, I doubt that it can actually duplicate the exact function of an actual ECG used in hospitals unless I see an actual, long-term study from a university and corroborated by other institutions as well. Considering how each ECG leads work, I'd like to know how Apple managed it. I could be wrong but it's possible it's only detecting limb leads (aVR, aVL, aVF) and not chest leads (V1 to V6). It might be possible that Apple added ML algorithms to try and figure out if a person is having MI or V-Fib despite that lack of chest and other limb leads.

I don't know if there is a disclaimer in the ECG feature of the Apple Watch prior to be used but I really hope there is one as the ECG is not a sole way to diagnose heart conditions as just like any other test, it can be a false positive or a false negative, and it cannot diagnose all heart conditions, if it will make people be conscientious and scrupulous on their lifestyle choices, then by all means use an Apple Watch. But this only shows that there is nothing big tech companies like Apple or Google would like to leave untouched by them and that includes healthcare.

Apple Watch essentially completes a circuit. Apple Watch on one wrist, your finger from your other arm. The idea being it gets data from your entire chest cavity through the arms.

That's what it is for. Apple Watch is not a ECG replacement. It is a tool to help apply preventative medicine and catch undiagnosed heart conditions. False negatives are almost impossible given the always on nature of the Apple Watch and its heart rate monitoring features. But if they do happen, and the user notices inconsistent readings, they are going to be more likely to see a doctor and when they do, the Apple Watch will have served its purpose. As for false positives, those are just a good reason to go to the doctor anyway. That way you can get tests done and catch anything that might be starting or went unnoticed previously.

Found an Apple whitepaper on series 4's ECG https://www.apple.com/healthcare/site/docs/Apple_Watch_Arrhythmia_Detection.pdf

I thought it reads an ECG just from a single lead, good to know you have to place another finger on the digital crown's sensor. It's quite impressive that they managed to cram that but I'd like to see a third party corroboration for its long term use.

Out of all people that I know that own any version, no one bought it as a health device, let's not pretend it supposed to some amazing life saving device. 

With that said, I am amazed that it actually sold that much. Better to say I am amazed that wearables sold that much. Considering the price, I am gonna go on a limd and say that they sold 9-10M units? Based on my local region. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

But what do they use it for then? Having a pedometer, HR monitor and GPS tracking are like the main features. Notifications on your wrist are great but I can't see someone spending that much just for that.

 

I have a Galaxy Watch 46mm and I think they're basically the same. I'm a bit skeptical of the ECG feature but it looks to be working okay. Otherwise a watch is an easy way to track heart rate and a GPS for workouts (I cycle)

I will not lie, I fail to see the purpose in general of wearables in this time and age, but I won't be so naive to say that there is no market for them since people are obviously interested in them and they have a purpose, be it for health, notifications (which since you're asking was the main reason since why not have a watch that can do that since they would normally wear a watch anyway) or just as a fashion statement. Those were mostly the same people that had to have the latest iPhone so there is that mentality as well. But as I said, this is purely anecdotal.

I love my Series 4. Picked it up because I needed a watch for work as there are not clocks around and that served as a good excuse to get a wearable. I really like the health tracking stuff, its interesting to see how many miles I walk in an 8 hour shift (did close to 9 miles a couple days last week) or how many flights of stairs I've climbed in that time (my current record is 10 flights during an 8 hour shift). Its not perfect as sometimes it will think I'm walking when I'm sitting in a chair, but I like what it offers so far.

For me I mostly use it as a GPS tracker/HR monitor. 

 

I didn't really consider buying the Watch just because, or for a fashion statement. I guess sometimes I think a bit closer to a Homo economicus than most ?

I used to get one with my Series 0, now I get like 2 with my Series 4. IDK how you get 3 or 5 lol.

I personally always use Cinema/theater mode; so my screen is always off until I tap, or press a button.

Although I use to get 3-4 days; now 2-3 with 1 hour exercise daily, after the latest Watch up date on my Series 3.
