Ryzen 5 2400g highest dedicated graphics card without bottlenecking

steelo

Hey everyone,

I built a Ryzen 5 2400g PC that I initially was going to just use for basic 720p gaming with the igpu. However, I later became interested in trying out Oculus VR games so I purchased a RX 570 after the fact. Otherwise, I would have gone with maybe a 2600 or a 2600X from the start.

My question is, what is the best current video card this 4C 8T cpu can handle? I’ve heard everything from a gtx 1060 to a gtx 1080. Right now, I have it overclocked to 3.9ghz and will soon be getting 8gb of 3200mhz ddr4 RAM. I'm just curious because I plan on possibly getting a more powerful graphics card in a few years that would probably be the equivalent of todays gtx 1070.

Usually VR is pretty dependent on the GPU due to the high resolution. And VR games are designed to have lower geometry and LOD to hit a 90fps target.

I'd say given the 8 threads and the resolution you should at least aim for the minimum required specs for VR when it comes to GPU.

A 590 is not more powerful than a GTX 1080 though. A 1060 or 590 does meet the required spec for VR, so if your budget allows for it, go with either one. And try to squeeze in 16GB, instead of 8GB. 8GB is a tad on the lower side these days. 3000mhz of 16GB would be better than going for high end 3200mhz memory and being only able to put in 8GB.

Vega 56 ~ RTX 2060 would be my personal highest.

Oh yeah, I figured a gtx 1080 would be too much for that CPU and I couldn't afford one anyways. I tend to stick with AMD graphics cards though because I don't like some of Nvidias questionably shady business practices as of late - nothing against those who like nvidia, just my personal preference.

I know my 570 is a bit underpowered for VR but games are quite playable, just not ideal. I wouldn't spend the money unless it is a significant performance jump. It looks like maybe a 590 would be a good upgrade in a year or two.

Don't bother with that train of thought, just get whatever you want.

If you have more performance, the Card runs cooler.

IF you have more power that you might or not want to use, some newer games have a slider for Render Resolution, can Increase that.

This was more of a curiosity question than anything else. I know in 2 years a 'higher end' 1070 or 1080 of today will be considered to be a 'mid grade'

I used to run a 4770 and a 970 for VR, if haswell can do the 90fps required for a comfortable VR experience then I doubt buying a nice powerful 1080 would cause you to suffer a bottleneck, there are even some games where the 2080 ti wouldn't have an issue with the 2400G so if you're targeting high quality GPUs for VR, 1070/1070 ti/2060 or Vega 56 territory does the job for you.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I can imagine already...

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 4950X

GPU: Intel Xe Iris Pro.

Can't wait for it.

Very true...in 3-4 years, the high end cards of today should theoretically be cheap though...LOL
