[SOLVED] 1080 Ti crashed under heavy load

dionkoffie

Hi,

I've picked up a 1080 TI from MSI and put it in my system. At first the gpu would crash when I would put any load on it at all. All my monitors would go blank and the GPU will spin like crazy. The PC still works fine except I have no display. I think it's my shitty old MS-Tech 750 watt power supply. I have connected it via 2 molex > 8 spin plus a regular 8 pin connector to my gpu.

I can play games when I lower the power limit to around 80% but it does crash every so often. Not as much as before.

This looks like a power supply issue right? Weird because my 1060 worked fine on this. I've already ordered a replacement PSU but I'd like to hear your thoughts. I'm 90% sure it's the PSU, but also scared if the gpu is broken or not.

Yes, if you have to adapt molex to PCI, thats NEVER a good thing. It is definitely an OLD power supply if it only has 1 PCI plug on it.

Replace the PSU ASAP.

Take the GPU out of the PC NOW until you get a new PSU.

The GPU and your system is at serious risk.

Bought it new 5 years ago, but yes I agree.

Can it hurt my GPU if I keep using it like this for a couple of days until my new one gets delivered?

I bought a Gigabyte B700H as a replacement btw.

I think it could if its causing you to crash from not enough/stable power under load. You have an iGPU on your 4770 so I would recommend using that to do basic tasks.

I still have my GTX 1060. I'll just use that in the meanwhile. Thanks a lot. I'll update once I get my new PSU.

Installed my new PSU with 2 8pin connectors and the GPU is working fine. Thanks!
