[Rumour?] Huawei P30 Pro "fakes" moon photos automatically?

A Weibo post quoted in the source

Quote

Beijin tech channel FView' writer uploaded a vidoe last week questioning P30 Pro's "Photoshop" the picture whenever using the phone to take moon pictures, even replacing the underwear picture, which has been manually replaced the Lunar Crater, with the Lunar Crater. FView later released a statement claiming that Huawei has used "advance calculations" to add more details to the pictures. The statement also criticized the writer for misleading the viewers and "brought bad influence to the industry". The writer has been fired.

After its report on Friday (19th) and the dismissal of the writer, PRC netizens has tested P30 Pro's photo shooting capability and discovered that the moon "enhancement" to be true. It even "enhanced" Pluto, which shape like the moon, and Chu Shi Biao, a famous ancient Chinese literature, in a circular frame into "moon".

Personal thought:

Personally can't verify if this is true or not. But if it's true, this is some major bull crap they've pulled. Imagine taking a photo of your kid with a Thomas the Tank engine model and Thomas' face becomes the moon surface... That'll be really creepy.

If LTT has a review sample, maybe try this out and let us know if this is (still) true. Would be really funny if a moon pic with a dickbutt superimposed or a blurred Linus butt pic ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) becomes a nice normal moon pic.

Honestly, I'm not really surprised.

If this is from the automatic "AI" mode, most phone cameras with that "feature" do bullshit like this anyhow, especially the "beauty" skin effect.

Colour correction error (and auto bokeh) turns into conspiracy theory and racist bashing.

OH I love this planet.

Though IMO auto bokeh is the spawn of the devil.

Auto modes in digital cameras, more so in consumer models and phone cameras, have been doing "enhance that" since forever. Not necessarily picking the moon as a specific subject up to now. It's a matter of how much software you want to write to detect and optimise for target subject cases. As they get more prolific in options, there is increased risk of false detection and inappropriate processing.

Also I misread the last bit of text as Char Siu Bao. Someone take a photo of one of those on the phone and see if it also turns that into the moon :D

then this is all bullshit then. pretty sure everyone knows that you can't take a picture like something on the right, "enhance" it and get a perfectly clear image like on the left.

The underwear is also one hell of a stretch...

oh right Huawei bad rrrrbrhrhhrgrgrhrgh

Huawei had done some stupid shit in the past, but this is the most flimsy "proof" to bash on the company.

Huawei is co-owned by the Chinese Government. That’s how most, if not all, communist “corporations” operate.

It's conjecture based of what little we know of Huawei's ownership, which isn't much once you get to "trade union committee"
https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/19/huawei-not-owned-by-its-employees-state-ownership-likely-research-paper/

It certainly wouldn't be a surprise with how tightly the CCP tries to control everything within China.

To be fair though, that's not exactly why governments and such are concerned about Huawei. It's not that. It's that every Chinese corporation has to cooperate with the government when requested; whether they're privately owned, or owned by the government.

Which is also true for US companies. If requested they have to comply. Nothing new, nothing Chinese-specific.

this unnecessary Huawei bashing seems really stupid to me.personally stock/custom ROM guy but their software does work great (my friend's phone). idk why people go crazy with brand loyalty. one plus,Nokia, etc caught sending data but no Huawei is dangerous. until any proof is provided ill have to assume it's done to keep Huawei out of 5g infrastructure since its a Chinese company.

As I person who were following the incident on Chinese forum for the past few days, I'd like to share some popular opinions & test results in Chinese tech community.

1. Huawei clearly uses a trained AI model in the moon mode, but the AI is trained well so that it won't pop up when you are shooting other things. Trained AI model is very hard to fool.

2. The "underwear" photo is a scam, it's just an out-focused photo, the result cannot be reproduced.

3. More tests are taken these days, according to these tests, the P30(pro) IS adding more moon detail when it's shooting photoshopped moon pictures, and it's ONLY-TRIGGERED when you are shooting moon, it won't trigger even when you are shooting bright circles in an dark environment.

4. It is NOT faking a moon picture thru photoshop, the phone uses the results of you actually shoot, and uses an algorism to make the photo look better. This is very common nowadays, every phone company does the same thing. This is how Pixel 3 can shoot amazing photo with it's dark mode.

The discussion is already over in the chinese tech community, and our conclusion is: YES, Huawei IS adding more moon details to the picture, but it's nothing new in the phone business.

I get that NA people don't like Huawei, same as your government. But there's really no reason to BS everytime you see the word "Huawei".
