Two 8gb sticks and one 16gb stick

Hello, I currently have two 8gb sticks and have been getting bottlenecked when rendering with 3d applications and multitasking so I wanted to add more ram and was thinking I add a 16gb stick to give me 8gb+8gb+16gb=32gb... and then in the future add a second 16gb stick giving me a total of 8gb+8gb+16gb+16gb=48gb 

But for now I just want to add 16gb.

 

I currently have these ddr4-3000 cas 16

I have an aorus x470 gaming wifi 5

 

Would this work or is it all around a bad idea?

I could also just buy the same 2 8gbs again to get me to 32gbs but then upgrading in the future wowould be harder. What are yourthoughts? Thanks!

I would get a single 16GB stick if you're okay with it underperforming until you can get another 16gb stick. 

 

Seems like you need more RAM period.  So more slower RAM is better than where you're at now.

 

Or you can sell your 2x8 set and upgrade to 2x16.

In most cases if you want to add more RAM, you should make sure that the RAM is of the same manufacturer, and has the same speeds. Like the latency's and MHz for instance. The amount of RAM that you're adding doesn't matter a whole lot if you at least make sure that they are the same speeds.

 

In the case that you added that 16GB 2400MHz RAM, it'd be recommended that you turn your 3000MHz sticks down otherwise you can get a whole mess of system errors.

Thanks for the input! Is it alright if the CAS is different? And is there any noticeable difference between the two speeds or is it really no big deal?

Do you mean get a single 16bg and add it to the two 8gbs I already have In there? Giving me 32gbs and throttling the faster 8gbs to match the 16gb?

Correct.  You have to sacrifice speed for quantity.  I don't know what benefit you're going to get with 32 vs 16gb of RAM, vs. the speed loss when throttling the 8GB sticks slower.

 

I'm betting that you'd rather have 32 GB of slower RAM than just 16GB of faster?

Correct , thanks for the advice! I was mainly worried about the sticks not bebeibebeinbebeibebeing compatible and not being able to boot or something, but I'd just need to match the speeds in the bios. Would i set them to the same speed or take the cas# into account and match them that way. Also would it matter where the 3rd ram is installed or should i just check my mb manual.

buuuutt, you will only get the capacity, and not bumping up your speed if you do that configuration. better yet, if you really want to upgrade your set up, you need to save more cash and just buy two additional 2x8 to save you from hassle and problems if your system dont cooperate on what you are doing.

I believe CAS correlates to the latency speed if I'm remember correctly. It is better to have similar CAS latency's I'd assume.

 

Also make sure the voltages and timings are similar.
