How many people are considering Linux now as a viable gaming option after LTT's video?

Just out of curiosity, what's the public's opinion on Linux gaming now?

I'm super ready to see Microsoft miss the mark and make a "Windows lite" Linux based OS but it still has a ton of junk and analytics/fingerprinting software which is what people want to use Linux to get away from in the first place.

meh, I run OSX, Windows and Linux. If the game runs on OSX I will often use it over the rest due to apple optimizing intel CPU's well (assuming the game runs well on OSX). Outside of steam OS I never really game on linux...  I mean windows is free now. I could see it gaining popularity in the future with game streaming becoming more mainstream.

Its not a real thing.  Linux cant run games for crap and if they do its going to be a low low fps.  Unix is like mac,, for dummies, Also MAC OS it based off linux.  If you take away the command line switches and all that jazz, unix is a simple ugly no control over OS.

Exactly. I have to many different pieces of software, from office for school to professional cloud storage solutions, I just can't shift it all over. I might try dual booting my laptop though.

Even though I selected Windows in the poll, because I will continue to use Windows as my primary OS, I will probably dabble in Linux gaming here and there. I just won't make it my primary gaming OS.

Isn't linux gaming pointless, unless you need linux for something else. If you are only into gaming, why not just use windows?

For me Linux is just an OS I mess around with once in a while.  I'm hoping to use it more and learn more as time permits but I can't see it replacing Windows for me anytime soon.

You can install many Steam games natively on Linux, and many more can install flawlessly via Proton/Wine.

 

I'm not personally a Linux fan, but even I see that it's not pointless. Besides, there are some issues with Windows:

1. It costs money (unless you bought an OEM computer that came with a license) - granted, you can simply not activate Windows, and that's a valid choice, but it's not ideal.

2. Windows has more invasive telemetry. I personally can live with the telemetry it captures, but others prefer to avoid it completely.

3. Windows has gotten a little buggy and crazy with Windows Updates, among other things - still a good OS, but not without it's flaws.

I'd consider it, but Linux needs to become more universal and more stable first.

 

Also, I play a lot of old games, some are online. Many of those don't run under Wine or get their anti-cheat triggered by it, so that would inherently be a loss unless something is done to better Windows support on the platform.

There's a lot wrong with this statement.

What... does that even mean?

 

Unix is a POSIX style umbrella of multiple OS's. Linux (technically isn't Unix, but it might as well be) is one example. Mac OS is another.

 

2. "MAC OS is based off Linux"

This is simply incorrect. Mac OS is based off of Unix, not Linux. It shares many similarities though.

 

3. Low FPS on Linux? What? Source, please.

While I have seen improvements in Linux and it's gaming capabilities, it just simply isn't set-up for gaming.

Ermm, how many wrongs in one post? OSX is BSD based, not Linux. Linux is a much better platform for gaming than Windows, being a lighter and faster OS. Applications natively compiled for Linux will run better than the same code compiled for Windows. Have you ever used a proper Unix based OS? If Unix is for dummies then what is Windows for? Morons that make posts with no idea of the facts?

There are advantages to linux, but for the person who is just interested in gaming on their computer, the downsides (lack of games being the main one) seem to massively outway the positives.

Have you looked into the list of compatible games for Linux?

 

There are a huge number of natively supported games, and most AAA games can work without much trouble using Steam's Proton.

 

Granted, there would be some sacrifice, as not every single game is supported (and especially non-Linux games, the support is hit or miss). But to say it massively outweighs the positives is perhaps a little premature.

If you don;t mind having to put in a bit more effort to get the games to work then it is a decent way to play them, but a lot of people consider windows gaming to involve too much messing around to get things to work, so for people like that it seems pointless. I would maybe be interested in linux gaming, but then again I'm interesting in using PCs for more than just gaming.

I've been Linux curious for a long time, can't remember the year but I do remember installing slackware on floppy! However up to now I've still had to use Windows main due to software availability. With recent developments in Linux gaming it makes it more interesting, although until that approaches 100% for games and apps it wont be possible to ditch Windows entirely.

 

It may be I'd go dual-system, one for certain uses, another for others. Will see where things go.

Sorry chief, I was a little bit too harsh.  I myself have tried 5 distros of Linux.  You just don't have control over the OS.  Things are too simple like its windows 95 or something.

Exactly, at college we have Acer Chromebooks that obviously run Chrome OS which is based on Linux and everytime we use them it feels like I've gone back to 1992 using Windows 3.1.

I think it's a viable option only if you don't own a windows license. It doesn't offer better performance, it doesn't support all the games/peripherals that windows does and having problems with some anticheat is game braking in multiplayer only games. I don't mean it can't be better than windows but at the current time it isn't unless all the games you play work well there and you don't wanna spend 15€ for windows

I mean true there are a command line stuff which I have no clue about.  Sorta like DOS ,, but more advanced, way more advanced.  But once you take away the command line, its a pretty dull OS and has no comparison to Windows 10.  just my 2 cents.  Im not a uncle billy fan boy or a Linux fanboy.  I'm just speaking the truth.
