xeon x5675 vs x5687

hi so im planing out my first gaming pc and im on quite a hefty budget of less than $500 if possible 

i was hoping to have this pc Microsoft Vr capable (im not calling it mixed reality cause its not) and play at moderate graphics if possible iv had some help with other guys on this forum find a good ex enterprise pc

my plan was to get a preowned radeon RX580 8gb for about $150

someone also suggested change out the cpu for a x56 upon searching iv kinda narrowed it down to two cpus a x5675 around $53 or a x5687 $45

the x5675 has a lower clock speed but 6 cores and the x5687 has 4 cores and higher base clock both are (hyper-threaded)

any help would be greatly appreciated

CAD? In USD you can get them closer to $100.

The X5687 has the edge here, better clocks are just good for gaming. I doubt mixed reality would be able to leverage 2 more cores.

Well the HP Proliant is a server so you'll have just about no access to CPU settings, including OC, but did you check what's verified to work? I have a Proliant myself and I don't believe any X Xeons are compatible past a couple special ones the community has tested. In fact I'm using one that's not technically compatible with my motherboard (see my signature) but a forum user on HP's site said it worked.

Since it's a server board then there's not universal support. HP should have info on their site. Also, The pic of what you linked ain't a G6, I have a G6 and it doesn't look like that.

I think they're using a stock image of another HP computer so if you buy that and get the wrong PC then you can have eBay purchase protection you. It's rare that these old servers are scams because companies are eager to replace them so they're common.

yep i have a potential backup if this inst compatible but i think they released some update of something

Just don’t forget that HP servers are known to speed up the fans if non-hp-approved pcie devices are plugged into the system.

 

regardless, that system will also use some juice, wouldn’t it be better to look for a 2600K or 3770K system? These should be pretty cheap these days..

Have you already bought that server? I'd recommend getting some workstation instead because they aren't as loud as servers and has better support for some hardware.

 

Maybe you could find some HP Z400 (one with 6 dimm slots) for cheap? They are pretty nice systems. There is only a few things I don't like about them, for example no overclock in BIOS and non-standard PSU (but it's a good quality Delta 475W). But they does support all X56**/W36** Xeons up to the best X5690/W3690.

 

Maybe you could also check if there is some Dell Optiplex systems with an i7-2600 or i7-3770 for cheap?

no i haven't bought it yet that's definitely true

i did a quick search and they are reasonably cheap

i have looked into some Optiplex's like 9010-9020s in the past but didnt really go after them cause it was kinda hard to find a tower for what i thought was cheep at the time

ill have to have another search

only issue is the cheaper Optiplex's with i7-2600s are either SSF or around $350 aud

If you're stuck with a non-OC mobo, a 6c/12t with the highest base clock is your best bet. The X5675 is a good option, X5690 if you can afford it, and IIRC there's an X5680 between those. Defo don't get a quad core though, a slightly higher clock isn't worth it. Most new games want 6 physical cores so a quad will hurt your performance in most newer titles, going forward I assume all the games will want a 6 core, they seem to be the sweet spot for gaming CPUs both on Intel and Ryzen.  

 

If you find a PC in a case that supports normal form factor mobos, you can always pick up an X58 motherboard later and then OC. Most X5675s will do 4.2-4.5Ghz on air, at that speed they run quite well. My X5670 (lower bin) keeps up decently well with even a 1080 Ti at 4.5Ghz, it's not mindblowing but for 60fps gaming it's fine.
