What should i upgrade?

Hi!

I was recently thinking, if I would upgrade my pc, what would I upgrade? I got no idea. I need your help with that.
This is my current setup:

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K Processor - 12MB Cache - 3.7 GHz - 6 Cores

Motherboard: MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX - 16GB Kit - 2x 8GB - 3000 MHz - CL15 - 1.35v

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X - 8GB
Case: NZXT H700i White/Black Windows RGB

SSD: Samsung 860 EVO SSD - 500 GB - 2.5" + HDD: Seagate Barracuda - 2TB - 7200 rpm - 64MB - 3.5"

PSU: Corsair RM650X - 650 Watt - Modular - 80 Plus Gold

Acer VG270 + XB271HUAB

CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster MasterAir MA610P

I got no clue on what I should upgrade if I were to upgrade. I probably won't upgrade in the next few months because it's still relatively new and I'm not really playing heavy games atm.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Is there any specific reason you need to upgrade? Would help with advising on parts. Otherwise the current system is more than capable of most common tasks without any issues.

I got no specific reason, maybe if I play a triple-A title that will not hit a lot of frames at 1440P.
More SSD space sound very good, might do that.

1440p generally isn't CPU bound yet, so you could upgrade to a 2080ti or a Titan but otherwise not much reason to upgrade yet.

Sounds like you're feeling the upgrade bug just to upgrade :) Like above, I'd get more SSD love so you can put all your game libraries on a faster drive for load speeds, which can help a lot or a little depending on game.

This exactly.

I think SSD is the best option, but how big should it be? 500gb? 1tb? M.2?

Not sure how much you need, but I'd grab a 1TB SATA M.2 for starters like this WD Blue:

https://smile.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0B/dp/B073SB2MXT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=m.2+sata+1tb&qid=1553702497&s=gateway&sr=8-3

You have 2 M.2 slots that can handle both NVMe or SATA (just make sure they are keyed right)...

STORAGE

Intel® Z370 Chipset

  • 6 x SATA 6Gb/s ports1
  • 2 x M.2 slots (Key M)
    • Support up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s
    • Support PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe U.2 SSD with Turbo U.2 Host Card2
    • M2_1 slot supports 2242/ 2260 /2280/ 22110 storage devices
    • M2_2 slot supports 2242/ 2260 /2280 storage devices
    • Intel® Optane™ Memory Ready for all M.2 slots3
  1. M.2 and SATA ports maximum support 1x M.2 PCIe SSD + 1x M.2 SATA SSD + 5x SATA HDDs.
  2. The Turbo U.2 Host Card is not included, please purchase separately.
  3. Before using Intel® Optane™ memory modules, please ensure that you have updated the drivers and BIOS to the latest version from MSI website.

Yes, they are.  That's an NVMe SSD tho, and you won't see the speed increase you're thinking about.  Unless you're doing a lot of very large file reading and writing NVMe speeds aren't realized.

So an ssd with ~500 read and write is the best option for gaming?

Im guessing that the GPU and CPU gotta keep up with the loading of textures and stuff?

Well, it's more about file size.  With small files, like the ones used for Windows booting, Office apps, Gaming, the SATA does fine.  It's more that the NVMe drives have a very fast sustained transfer speed that really shines with very large files, like files measured in multiple GB's.

But yes, any 500 Mb/s SSD in either M.2 or even 2.5" formats is good.  They're the same, just different shapes.

860 EVO 1TB is a good drive too, but more expensive than that WD Blue I linked earlier.  They'll perform the same.

Naw, go with preference. I would go Samsung but that's just me.  I have 2 of the 1TB 860 EVO's in RAID 0. No issues at all.

Also, I would get a better CPU Cooler and push your 8700K to 5GHz.  You'll get a nice boost from that.

Also, I would get a better CPU Cooler and push your 8700K to 5GHz.  You'll get a nice boost from that.

5GHz sounds tasty, what cooler do you recomend?

I also have no clue at all how to overclock, but 20% boost sounds like its worth it

I have a 360mm AIO, but I would defer to someone like @Jurrunio since they brought it up first and probably has a lot more knowledge about coolers than I.

OC is easy, your motherboard may even have a preset upgrade option.  Otherwise, many guides out there on Youtube.

More SSD space for games? Or a better cooler for more overclock or lower noise.

Any coolers you recommend @Jurrunio?
