Remotely connecting to another PC? The good way

So here is my dilemma, I have 2 windows machines and would like to connect the 2 remotely.

 

I've used TeamViewer in the past but I wasn't really a fan at the time. Is there any really great software or is the built in remote desktop through Microsoft worth a try?

 

Also I apologize if this is in the wrong thread.

I've never heard of that one, but I'll give it look right now.

 

I'm also open to more suggestions just in case.

you need windows pro or better, but it works well and is built in.

You need Windows Pro on the remote end, just to be clear. You can access from all sorts of devices (Windows, Android, iOS, etc.) on the local end.

That is good information to know being that I don't have Windows Pro edition. I'd prefer to have remote access instead of just being locked locally.

I had planned on using a hotspot to connect remotely. Unless you would suggest more security?

Personally teamviewer untattended works really well, even over mobile. What kind of problems were you having?

RDP / Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Protocol - works very well. If you're going to use this over the internet there are risks (if you don't keep your computer up to date for one) which may allow somebody to gain access to your system.

I just remember some latency issues that bothered me. I didn't use it for very long.

By default it is supposed to atuo-adjust the quality, but you can always set it manually. Sometimes when I have "spikes" of lag that it doesn't handle well, I'll manuall drop the quality just to keep thing smooth.

 

I have however streamed movies/anime over teamviewer quit nicely.

Personally, I'm extremely fond of Teamviewer. It's simple, and works pretty well over a variety of conditions.

 

Windows RDP would probably get the best performance, but you'd only want to run that over an encrypted VPN connection.

 

VNC and other similar products to Teamviewer are also possibilities.

Hmm thats weird of all the options so far I was impressed by the latency with team viewer not bad at all in my book

What hardware/software config do you have on the PCs that you're attempting to remote into? If you're using nVIDIA GPUs, there's Moonlight. If you're using Chrome on them, there is Chrome Remote Desktop. There are multiple solutions for your needs. What will you be doing in the session? Are you okay with portforwarding? What kind of visual fidelity do you need when remoting in? Not all clients/software is the same...

I have gone through every remote connection software in the past, which was mostly agony and disappointment.

 

The downside of RDP for me was the fact it created a new login session, which i didn't want. I wanted to take over the session of the user that was logged in. Might be better now and i know it was possible with the /console parameter but i just didn't like the way it worked.

 

I wen't through at least 5 different VNC versions before giving up as VNC was for me just to slow and to much lag.

 

Never liked the way teamviewer worked.

 

Using webbrowsers is just something i didn't want to do....

 

In the end i ended up with Radmin. But that costs money, so yeah..... needed a way around that somehow.... But i have been using it for years now and it is fast out of the box and can be made faster by raising the updates per second. You can make it safer by using the ip filter, so only pc's from a specific IP can log onto the server/pc. The downside for some people can be the lack of a mobile app... and it only working on windows. But you're asking to connect 2 windows pc's, so should be fine.
