Installing SSD in Laptop possible?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering whether I could install a 2,5" SSD in the harddrive bay on the bottom left of image1.

There is no slot like you can see in image2. Is there any other way to install a 2,5" SSD, e.g. via cable or is my only option upgrading the storage by installing a higher capacity NVMe SSD?

The laptop model is a HP Pavilion 15-CK... with i5 8250u, SSD 256GB, MX150, 8GB 2400 DDR

Thanks.

Unless you're willing to try your hand at soldering and selling to lose a usb port you could put a usb to sata converter inside it.

That would probably be more trouble than its worth. I guess going for a higher cap NVMe is the easier option.

Thank You.

Is that a SD card reader on right? If it has good enough speeds you could get some 128GB or 256GB SD card and use it for something.

Yeah there is, but I was looking for a drive for my games and a fast micro sd with 512GB costs more than a 1TB NVMe and almost as much as a 2TB NVMe.

Take some closer pictures of that bay and it's port. I didn't really understand your description. Don't wanna tell you something wrong.

By the looks of it, to save money, they did not even fit an SSD/SATA connector... so no go. :(

There do seem to be resellers selling replacement SATA cables/bays from the other models. There seems to be a ribbon cable attachment there for it, but I have *no idea* if it is locked out in the BIOS, so I'd only do it if it was me, but not recommended someone else do it.

It's like TechyBen says there is no port:

That sounds like a good option.

Could you point out where on the motherboard that cable attachment is. I'm fairly clueless about that stuff.

This is the model that came with a SATA 2.5inch drive (see below). As said, it might be a different BIOS, so while the connector is there, and a cable is available off ebay... it may not work.

If you have a spare HDD, and the cable is $2, then it costs nothing to "try". But if the cable is expensive, It's probably not worth wasting the time.

Maybe this port, can we get a closeup?

It's a problem though, if no existing models have that port populated. If they never released a model using it... they probably never added support to the bios.

Don't know. They look like the kind of thing needed. You'd have to see which one fits the 1TB HDD model, and see which shape/connector it was.

I'm currently not at home so I can't open it up right now, but I found an article describing the disassembly of this laptop and it has some more pictures:

I know... I always get that feeling of dread when scrolling through my steam library and I don't even remember when or why I bought half of these games.

Doesn't stop me from induldging in every steam sale though ?
