Cannabis in Canada

You asked about legal weed in Canada. So here are my 2 cents: 

 

- The weed you legally buy is overpriced and...meh. The buds are dry because some of the oils/crystals are removed to produce other products like keef. There is an excessive amount of packaging for a small amount of grass. No edibles allowed but for some reason high concentrate THC oil is totally fine. 

- Buying weed on the grey market is where it’s at. Order online. Get good weed at your doorstep. Lots of edibles to choose from. The watermelon gummies are fire! I have done it for years without a problem. Even before legalization. 

- The black market has even better weed at better prices. But having a dealer is a hassle.

The DEA doesnt give a shit about the drug dealer on the street corner, they are after the drug cartels trying to sneak it in or try to stop the opioid epidemic. Thats how states get away with it, because now they legalize it and dont have to pay to keep those type of people in prison any longer. So its cheaper on them. Then that leaves cops to deal with real crimes like murder and shit. Honestly its only a matter of time before the Feds decide to legalize and tax it themselves. I mean look at Prohibition, did not succeed. The government knows this, and im sure they see the amount of money Colorado is raking in.

Can't speak for Canada, but in California you can simply walk into any cannabis shop, show an ID (a driver's license will do), and be able to buy a pretty large amount of weed on the spot. You can't smoke on public property or while driving, but otherwise the laws are no different than consuming alcohol.

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE! If you get caught with Cannabis at the border, the US Customs agents can charge you with a federal crime. If you're American, they can't really prevent you from coming home (though they can make your life a living hell) - if you're not a Citizen of the US, doing this can get you a life-time ban to entering the US.

As others have mentioned, federally it's still illegal, and federal law trumps state law. The reason why the states get away with it is because the Feds have a longstanding policy of "looking the other way" when it comes to states that have legalized it.

It is 100% legal in Canada. We have shops where you can walk in (they check ID) and can purchase weed. They usually have a good selection based on the location. Since this is a brand new business venture alot of competition to become the "Wallmart" of weed is currently happening. Due to supply and demand and not being able to just grow it anywhere (hard to import due to many countries having it as illegal substance) the prices can jump as the supply isnt there. 

 

Currently I am waiting for edibles to become 100% legal. Currently since its a food it is falling under weird place where you must abide to a strict health code but since its meant to get you high it's become a strange thing to try and control. 

 

As for tourists I would check with your country laws. This would be the same as escorts in some countries or Weed in any country. Since its legal here you could smoke in someones house and no Cop would care and you would be breaking 0 Canadian laws. But I do not know how that would work since Im assuming alot of US people here.

Can I legally buy from those shops as a foreigner using my passport? That would save me heaps of trouble and lots of sketchy deals.

That is a great question. Honestly I am not sure... I am sure the person at the front (the person who ID's people as you must be over 18 to be in the shop) would know more about that. I do not believe you have to be Canadian as I have seen a few friends who are not Canadian purchase weed. I could ask the next time I go purchase CBD oil and cookin weed. Gotta make that great weed butter for cookin for Christmas lol. Canada Christmas is great since everyone high AF these days.

Please do, I am actually considering about studying in Canada. This by far makes it one of the most eligible countries to apply if I can just keep my sanity while studying by blazing it.

Basically yes, but only if the person at the store front recognizes your passport. So it may be hit or miss, especially if you're from a country that we don't get a lot of visitors from.

I guess after attempting to buy numerous times from the same shop someone would check if its real or call the cops which would be fine as my first encounter by RCMP (it would make hell of a story).

Ahh that's what you meant.

 

In Canada, you need a license to import Cannabis. It's not illegal to import it (bring it across the border), but you do need the proper paperwork, as it's still a heavily controlled substance, just like a lot of other things.

 

So a regular person is not going to be able to come back from, say, Amsterdam, and bring some Cannabis with them. If you happen to have some and declare it at the border, pretty sure they just confiscate it and destroy it - you only face criminal charges if you try and sneak it in.

 

You can also get a Health Canada exemption for importing it - for example, if you are prescribed Medical Cannabis.

Why wouldn't you be able to? Checking ID isn't to check for citizenship, it's to check for age. However, some countries are very strict on what you do and may test you once you return to your country. IIRC some Scandinavian countries were doing this.

Eh, even then I don't think it's much of an issue. I know a few people that work at pot shops. As long as you have what they deem looks credible they couldn't care less.

Confiscate and destruction only is very up to the officer you end up dealing with; criminal prosecution is still a very real possibility, or at the very least, arrest. It's not really something I'd even attempt (and really, why would you, when it's cheap and readily available; if you were transporting larger quantities, you're more likely to face prosecution).

 

To be fair, you're ability to get a Health Canada exemption is minuscule, and Medical Cannabis isn't one of the often acceptable means. It's usually for scientific reasons or seeds for business start ups. The exemptions are also on a per use basis; it works once, and then you have to reapply.

Well, like Canada's healthcare system is structured on a provincial level, not federal, the weed boom is likewise provincial.

Other then that, weed has been normalized in one way, but the fact there are edibles and vaping is not regulated in that way its a shit show.

I dont smell the weed too often, vaping clouds are more common but you just dont know what they are smoking because it could be weed oil, or heroin oil, or raspberry oil. I find when I smell a fruit flavor in the air, its always from a vapist and its sometimes grown ass men and I just shake my head side to side. Times have changed.

 

BTW if you have weed on you when you cross the border, you will be charged! Even though its legal, you cant cross the line with it.

Weed grows natural, and heroine is manufactured.  Vapers were doing vitamin e, and that's bad!
