My week of messing with my golden HD 7870

Its been about a week since i started my Overclocking expedition on this card.

I found that this card loves to clock high, even before i started modding it. " "

 

Here are some of my personal notes when testing stuff:

From what i found is that i can run stable 20%+ oc's 

I also noticed my temperatures have been very low for the gpu itself (cant say the same for the VRMS) maxing out at 58c-64c 1.4V-1.47V

Stock Core speed is 1000mhz and i now have it running at 1380

stock mem speed is at 1200mhz and i am now running it at 1380 aswell.

 

I found with increasing the voltage over 1.4v i was able to obtain 1450mhz core and 1420mhz mem speeds, The card is preforming better then my old 270x even with its low VRAM.

 

So what my current issue is ,is  VRM tempatures, they are getting hot and i have a feeling they are limiting me a bit. After decreasing the ambient temperature and throwing a fan on top of the vrms there was a very noticable increase in stability. So the question i have now is how i could keep vrm temps down, i was thinking about buying some thermal adhesive and heat sinks off amazon for the VRMS. the card itself is watercooled with a H100.

That's a great plan right there, keep the fans aimed at them too

Is that much voltage even good for long use on that GPU?

 

As for VRM temperature, there are small heatsinks with sticky thermal pad on the market but it's easier to just keep using the extra fan.

I doubt the voltage is good for it, but ive been keeping the temps in check,.

 

maybe ill just add more fans

Make them deltas and you definitely won't have to worry about temps

I have a shelf full of antminers, they have some nasty fucking fans on them i can use.

Ideally that would be an insane card to take subzero. But that voltage is ouch, I remember when I had my R9 280, it did 1285 core and 1865 memory all stock voltage and fan speeds.

I would love to do something like that, i have a fab shop so im somwhat capable, but i dont know what i would use, the only cooling stuff i have is NOS lol

Get a GPU pot and start experimenting with LN2/Dry Ice

i may have the means for subzero, i own a fab shop so if you have any ideas throw them at me and i would loveto give them a shot.

AMD cards were always good for OC

 

bumped my 2 reference to 1550 on core with 1.21V

did nothing to the mem since I think the stock speed is good already but boi the fans running at full blast are really noisy

you should add the heatsinks and keep the fan if that works

Oh shoot I think you jinxed my card. It works but is not having some issue after applying a constant voltage

Well the mobo is dead I think, no. Post no beep. Cleared cmos. And stuff. 

Took off everything and still nothing. I ordered a new mobo

eh, B350 Tomahawk isnt a good board anyway. What board did you order?

I'm talking about the board in the post. My main build is fine. 

It was a gigabyte ga-78lmt-usb3

I just got some ransom am3+ Matx board as a replacement

at least AMD still sold a good number of AM3+ boards out so replacements are cheap
