Hello Linustechtips

I'm looking for a Marantz receiver that will be able to do 6.1 where it has the rear which is shown in purple.

This is because I have replaced my Center speaker and want to use it for the rear speaker.

No, it's not ideal

Or rather, on most of todays receivers it's not something that's available.
You can get older receivers that had it. SR7200 from Marantz for example.

However I think most manufacturers gave up on the rear center channel in the early 2000's.

6.1 never went anywhere and only a few older receivers were even capable of doing 6.1. Infact, the only disc I know of with 6.1 sound was a HD-DVD of Face-Off.

Even today 5.1 is still the standard. Though you can have 7.1/9.1/11.1, they are mostly flashy features as you do not get a lot of content to the added channels over tradition 5.1. However, If you are using Audyssey DSX or DTS NEO X for the 'wide' channels of anything past 5.1, you gain the most surround content. I personally have 11.1 surround and while it does offer a significant surround experience in certain intense scenes due to all the extra channels, it's not something I would recommend to the average user.

I would suggest you buy a second center channel of the exact same make/model (if its still available) and go with a 7.1 'wide' implementation as that would give you the most improvement. Otherwise sell your old center channel.
