Intel Comet Lake Packs Up to 10 Cores (Updated)

The latest updates to Intel's聽Linux DRM kernel driver and聽coreboot聽(previously known as LinuxBIOS) reveal some pretty interesting information about Intel's upcoming Comet Lake (CML) processors.聽Comet Lake is the successor to Intel's聽Coffee Lake聽and Whiskey Lake聽processor architectures. The description in the聽updateto the Linux DRM kernel driver claims "Comet Lake comes off of Coffee Lake". Hence, it's safe to assume that Comet Lake is yet another refresh in Intel's practice of rewarming the Skylake architecture and that Intel will fab Comet Lake chips on the聽already saturated 14nm manufacturing process. Coreboot, an open source project to replace the聽BIOS聽and聽UEFI, has some vital information on Comet Lakes.聽According to theGithub page,聽Comet Lake-U (CML-U) processors, which are primarily aimed at聽laptops, carry up to six聽cores,聽while the Comet Lake-H (CFL-H) and Comet Lake-S (CMT-S) chips feature up to 10 cores.聽Intel is expected to launch its Comet Lake processors around the middle of the year. It's possible Intel could announce the chips at Computex 2019, which starts May 28.

To believe only three years ago Intel's top of the line mainstream CPUs were only 4C8T. Yet, here we are looking at 10C20T CPUs being released as mainstream parts in 2019. It's really a wonderful thing when competition is brought into a market, and we have AMD and Ryzen to thank for this. Also looking back, three years ago, a 10C20T CPU from Intel would have cost you nearly $1800 USD as an HEDT part. While there are no rumors on pricing, we can at least think Zen 2 could quite possibly push the price down to more than half of what it was for a 10C20T 6950X: that's if Intel wants to retain its relevancy in the marketplace. Which also means they are going to have to do better than i9-9820X pricing as well; especially if any of the Ryzen 3000 series rumors are to be correct (12C24T for $300 and 16C32T for $449).聽

A roadmap from Mitac (embedded systems manufacturer) shows Comet Lake - the successor to Coffee Lake-R - is expected in Q2 2020, that's the second quarter of next year. Comet Lake will still be a generation that is fabbed at 14 nm. Rumors suggest that the top model for the desktop will be a chip with ten cores and twenty threads.

The roadmap also mentions Elkhart Lake on the slide. This is the successor to Gemini Lake (Atom procs) and should appear on the market in the first quarter of 2020. They are ultra low power socs that are based on Ice Lake and will also be manufactured at 10 nm. In addition, these chips would get the Gen11 graphics.

This year more Coffee Lake refresh CPUs will be released this month, in April. The new R0 stepping , which Intel currently launches for Coffee Lake Refresh , could already be the basis for Comet Lake, (since they continue to use the same 14-nm production). Various steppings are used and mix some predecessors with successors under almost the same name, Intel also offers CPUs in the same series even with thermal grease and alternatively with soldered heatspreader.

Yes, actually.

The really important information isn't the 10 core bit. It's that the Mobile parts will be launching. This means Icelake Mobile is going to be functionally a paper launch, or, at best, a niche product. (It will have better cores, so it should be better than Comet Lake clock for clock, even in mobile.)

Great to see core counts increasing with every product refresh. It was well overdue after going from the core 2 quad days to kaby lake with only 4 cores.

To those on this board more informed than I, what do you think are the chances of intel's mainstream desktop successor to comet lake being 10nm?

Pretty good by all accounts. That said i wouldn't get excited about this, even assuming intel have been able to push the silicon further simple TDP is going to be harshly limiting them. They don't have much headroom on 14nm to push things further.

I'm not quite sure this was their intention, considering聽Cannon Lake and 10nm woes. But I guess that goes along with the "depending on whom you ask."

Nevertheless, I would surmise that the majority believes Intel's core count increases were mostly a knee-jerk reaction to AMD Ryzen. However, you will also find those who do claim it was Intel's plan all along.聽

Either way, it's great for the consumer, regardless of the truth behind the matter.

intel would not of taken the steps they have in recent years without ryzens competition in regards to聽 getting rid of dual core basically and upping core count at least not as quickly as they have been forced to.

Some of Intel's leaked roadmaps put聽the mainstream hexacore as pretty late.
