Depends. Most people run plex (or just home media in general) off of home servers, other than that, I don't see a need for a typical end user :P @Hypoxz

"It depends."

I have a home server because:

-NAS

-VM host

-long running "stuff" can run on it (home engineering stuff)

-etc

Many people don't need the above.  You can also do "server" "stuff" on Ryzen chips (that ECC support).  A lot of actual server hardward isn't cheap and isn't needed most of the time.  In fact, I have some old westmere hardware that I'm hopefully replacing with a Ryzen 3 (or what ever they're calling it) when it's released (I'm cautious of the core count per memory channel ratio though).  The main thing that's annoying is going to be fitting all those PCIE cards on a Ryzen system.  Sadly I don't think I can justify a TR system at this point.

Another thing to keep in mind is that older server hardware can eat up a good bit of POWER.  So sometimes buying newer but lower power (in both senses) hardware can better.  Especially because most people don't need dual 100+W CPUs for a NAS etc.

My .02.
