mom uses a WD my passport drive, no clue how thats working out for her. its suposed to back up stuff after you just plug it in, or thats what she was told at least, so she pluggs it in from time to time i guess

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

that's a timemachine drive. If she set it up correctly, that's how it works. :)

I actually built it myself with some parts I had lying around and it is running xpenology which essentially means it runs the synology NAS OS.

The SSD of my imacs fusion drive is slowly dying, so I defused it...I now boot from an external SSD (I think corsair) via usb3, and use the internal hdd for extra storage.  And I use a variety of drives, mainly WD, but some seagate and toshiba for various purposes, most thru USB3, but a few thru Firewire800

I had multiple 1-2TB drives laying around from my windows days and bought NTFS for Mac to move all music and code I made to a new drive I bought, and then reformatted them and I use one of them as a Time Machine drive nowadays. I do however plan on migrating all to a file server soon so the headache might begin again soon.

I went the NAS route as well for time machine backups and random other stuff. I can't bring it with me to work so it's slightly less ideal than a thunderbolt drive, but gets the job done I suppose as it's predominantly media that I wouldn't need.

Synology DS416.

i still find that the most reliable way of storing things are good old hard drive plug and play.

Yes,  they are a bit overpriced, but if you buy NAS you get more storage for less money than a Thunderbolt device.

I think you can buy better a NAS than a Thunderbolt device.
