Can't decide on 2080TI

JRJUK

Hi everyone,

In September I will be promoted at work so I will get a pay rise & to celebrate I will be building myself a new gaming rig & it's just not worth upgrading my current rig (i5-4690K)

I like my technology to be clean & minimalist & I will be doing a white & purple build, I've worked out most of the components I will be using but I'm unsure about the Case, Mobo & variant of GPU (I will ask in those forums)

Now the GPU is the area I'm least sure about in terms of what I want, all I really know is that I want a 2080TI & either in black or white but that's about it. The only one I have really looked at in detail is the Zotac GAMING GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AMP Extreme which is all black (from what I've seen) with a large amount of RGB on the sides.

If anybody could suggest a 2080TI in black or white & is relatively clean in design (for a GPU) I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

You can try the EVGA Black.  Also what resolution do you play at ?  The Ti is only good if your gaming at 4k but even then you only get 60fps .... If your playing at 1440p then the 2080Ti is pointless.  If your gaming at 2160p then it will be playable but 60fps is not going to cut it now a days and what not.

In that case then get the 2080Ti for sure.  Yes take a look at the EVGA Black … Its really sexy and protects the PCB.

The EVGA cards are a OCing beast no matter what version you get.  The Black will surely keep things cooler with its protective PCB.  When I had my EVGA 6" single fan1060 6GB I was able to max out my VRAM to +1000 and core I would put at +150 so I know fact the EVGA black you might get will allow for 1000Mhz plus OC in VRAM and a little bit on the core voltage, without over voltage.

I believe MSI's Duke OC is black/white, and the Gigabyte Aorus Extreme and ASUS Strix cards are a dark grey.

That's uh... not how it works. There's silicon lottery and also these are two separate generations of GPU. They won't OC the same, the 2080 Ti may OC higher or lower but you can't guarantee a certain overclock other than the factory one. Also EVGA cards don't OC any better than other manufacturer's as far as I've seen (other than ones like the Kingpin made specifically for overclocking), they're just really well made and their warranty and customer support is excellent.

Nice post Zando Bob, I missed you haven't seen you in a while.  Anyhow, any of these video cards will be amazing.  Don't overlook MSI as they make really high quality boards.  If it was me I would get a EVGA Black tho and it is the cheapest out of the 3.  You are guaranteed a nice OC like I said before and amazing warranty service.

Again, that's not how it works. Unless you buy a card designed to be overclocked to the moon, you're not guaranteed anything (and even if you do buy an aforementioned card, you're still not really guaranteed better-than-average results without better gear, since Turing is pretty meh overall on OCing).

Congrats on the promotion.  Honestly I would go with an EVGA RTX 2080 TI Black Edition and just use those stupid white plastic inserts to fill your build sine this is the cheapest card at $1000.  But no the Black does not overclock the best and actually is the B stock if I am not mistaken and actually runs a tad warmer than the regular XC or XC Ultra Cards.  But to be honest this is all you need since most RTX cards just don't overclock well unless power limits are modified or you buy those $1600+ cards...

I am not huge on aesthetics since I run a closed system but I love my EVGA XC Ultra, running at 1440P Ultra on any game has the card at 67 degrees on average.

Why waste money on that overprieced thing?!
Why not go with VEGA 7 or whatever on the other side and go with that?

AS for your CPU: I'd hold out until Ryzen 3000 in Summer, if possible.

A Compromize would be getting a well supported AMD X470 mid endish Board and put a 2600X or 2700x on it and plan to upgrade ASAP.

I really don't get why you don't even think about "the other Side"...

Wouldn't a Vega 7, RTX 2080, GTX 1080 Ti be a waste of money in your book as well?  Listen if the guy has the means to buy a RTX 2080 Ti and wants the best consumer graphics card then why not?  I am not sure if your comment is purely based on being a AMD shill or being one of those people that is solely hung up on getting the most FPS per dollar.  I get it a RTX 2080 Ti is an insanely overpriced graphics card and it's scary to think $1000+ is becoming the new norm but I could say the same thing about US college's costing $35K per year or the average purchase price of a new car being more than $37K now.  Are we getting substantially more than we did previously, heck no but frankly this is what it costs, so if you want to vote with your wallet that is your prerogative but I find it really annoying when people tell people how to spend their money.  Unless this guy is some degenerate who doesn't pay child support and is in massive debt than who cares?

Those are around half the price, or less.

Or have more VRAM.

Quote

Listen if the guy has the means to buy a RTX 2080 Ti and wants the best consumer graphics card then why not?

Yeah, everytime you mention that there might be other alternatives, people come around and attack people because they dare to speak out against something...

Maybe because there might be better ways to spend the Money?

Maybe it makes sense to talk about other alternatives??

Quote

I get it a RTX 2080 Ti is an insanely overpriced graphics card and it's scary to think $1000+ is becoming the new norm

it will become the norm, the more people buy it, the more likely it is.

But who cares that the "normal guy" can't afford "normal PC-Gaming" and goes to consoles, because there is no competition and one guy can do what they want.

If they make the next generation more expensive than the last one...

That is why Competition is important and considering those as well.

But these days it looks like too many people don't understand Market and want competition but don't even think about purchasing the side that isn't the Market leader by a big amount...

Quote

but I could say the same thing about US college's costing $35K per year or the average purchase price of a new car being more than $37K now.

College in the US is totally offtopic and many people don't need it.

There are some good examples of pretty sucessful College dropouts - people like Louis Rossmann...

Or for what is a Degree in African or Gender Studies worth when I want to become an Electrician??

Quote

Are we getting substantially more than we did previously, heck no but frankly this is what it costs,

This is what it cost because people like you attack people mentioning alternatives or that it might not be a good idea to buy the total overpriced version of a graphics card.

Because if they see that many people buy it, that is here to stay and the next round of Graphics Cards will be even more expensive.

The Round after that even more.

Because people buy it.

And people mentioning that it makes sense to save the money and invest in other things get attacked.

Thus the GPUs will be more and more expensive...

CPUs will be more and more expensive.

Remember the time when a higher end, (more or less) overclockable Core i5 was sold for around 150€??

Right now they are +75% of the price of a CPU back in the day...

Quote

who cares?

who cares if you have to pay 500€ for a mid range card with ~120mm² Die Size.

Who cares about that??

You know that the x70 nVidia Cards were sold for 250€ at one time??

That was when there was actual competition and "the other side" had the better, more power efficient product...

I really don't get why you don't even think about "the other Side"...

The Radeon 7 is about as powerful in games as a 2080 but has less features, I wont be using a GPU for any compute applications so I might as well go team green.

Also because the Radeon 7 only comes in 1 colour it sort of rules it out because I'm going for a particular look.

Why not Ryzen, because in games Intel is still better, however if i was going to stream I would go AMD for sure

But what does it do?!
I feel like its 32bit vs 16bit on TNT(2) vs. Voodoo.

32bit was a feature. Nobody cared that it was totally useless.

An the first nV Card that could really use 32bit framebuffer was the Geforce. And here more the DDR-SDRAM Version...

Riva might have supported it but it was totally useless.

And also, if you want to use the GPU for longer, look at how GTX680 and Radeon HD7970 perform now.

The 7970 annihilates the GTX680...

Same with many other AMD Cards, that they perform better when they get older.

Why not wait on the CPU and look how Ryzen 3000 performs and decide when that's out?

Your Haswell is still OK these days and you don't waste money on things you regret. And you have all the facts and can decide.

Right now we know that Ryzen 3000 will be far better than Ryzen 2000 and that Intel doesn't have an answer...

And its not even that long, next month we might get more infos about that baby...

So right now, I'd hold off on CPU and Board and only upgrade the GPU...
