As they mentioned, CMAA is where amd chips go godmode, thx intel

It's the AA implementation. It loves Vega for some reason. The game's SMAA options do nothing but kill performance (and benchmark consistency), which is why Steve has used CMAA with it. Another "fun" trick Nvidia has loved over the years in their sponsored titles is the Ultra settings have something that doesn't work well on AMD but works just well enough on Nvidia to show a big gap.

It's part of the reason why Hardware Unboxed's optimization series is pretty nice. ~30% better performance, in most games, for no real loss in visual quality. Should probably encourage Steve to benchmark some of the games, as a slate, with the optimized results, just to see the performance uplift by tier of cards.

Steve needs to get to the overclocking/undervolting, that's where this card (will) shine. But I think it will take him a while because he won't have been able to do it with the broken press drivers. Only release day drivers allowed it and overclocking is still very glitchy.

I ran some Time Spy this morning and here's the results. I didn't do the CPU test as my CPU is 7 years old and tanks in that test.

At stock speeds and undervolted to 975mv:

Overclocked to around 2030-2050 and 1200 mem: (Wattman shows a higher speed but it only ever peaks at 50 less than the peak number)

Yes that's a 21% improvement on Air. Now we need the drivers to be fixed so that benchmarks can be run in fullscreen mode without the clocks resetting.

WTF?

I didn't think the Radeon 7 had this much gas left in the tank for overclockers.

Are you sure that your stock numbers haven't got lowered by undervolting?

from other people testing no it does not reduce performance

Yawn...

Rinse repeat. We see the same thing every generation.

All the issues with the beta drivers are clearly documented in the release notes that come with the download. It appears that pretty much every newly released product these days from almost every tech company is released prematurely. It's the price you pay for early adoption.

This will all be fixed within a few weeks and then we will see the real accurate benchmarks. I'd suggest a fair comparison of four months down the road when given the same amount of opportunity nvidia has had to refine their drivers at this point in time.

I would say the scandal nvidia pulled that is still an ongoing issue where users paid for cores they can't even actively utilize is a much bigger deal but of course nvidia can never do any wrong in the eyes of many despite having a long history of anti consumer practices since inception.

What does windows 10 and ET have in common?

They are both constantly trying to phone home.

A significant amount of Radeon cards have a lot to give with optimization. Nvidia moves enough volume to bin down the GPUs in a way that they don't get quite the spread per SKU. For the low-volume Vega parts, it can be pretty intense. There's guys around with +15% OCs at far lower total power draw, just because they got good silicon.

Hardware unboxed reports in their latest video that the latest drivers fixed the stability issues.

That was fast.

System specs:

We got 5 of these in at work today. Was kind of surprised. Two of them sold already.

Any high-end GPU will sell a bit for curiosity purposes alone, but this is going to get eaten up by people that want the FP64 performance.

unfortunately, that's the biggest difference, as seen in this comparison of the 1080ti, most other things AMD will lag behind

The lack of significant improvement in the ROPS really did Vega in. If it didn't get crushed in the advanced AA settings, it'd have gone a lot better.

we can only hope that Navi will be a better release given how much people are hyping it up.

RTG has been good on hype and delivering the performance their semi-custom customers have paid for. That's good for AMD's bottom line, but the optics have been pretty bad.

I'm more curious as to what Lisa meant by "part of the high end" at CES, tbh.  I'm not a fan of hype train express, but it sounds like there's going to be something a tad more promising as a sole gaming card.

We know of 3 Navi designs for AMD, though internal product numbers are still unknown, specifically. There's also at least two versions for the Consoles (possibly 2 for each company) and whatever Apple is buying off AMD. There are going to be a lot of Navi parts coming over the next 18 months. What happens with "Big Navi" in 2020, which should also be a compute card, is anyone's guess.

Did they state directly 2020 for stronger Navi cards or was that another Adored or other "leak":?

Most of the information we have from Drivers, actually, plus the occasional AMD employee that posts on forums, so we have internal names. While CPU side, it appears the next Threadripper's name is "Arden", though we'll get some leaked roadmaps at some point.

Product development is a long process, so stuff always gets out. The first chunk of Navi drivers showed up for Apple in the last update. Chunks have been popping up for a while in Linux drivers. Things like that. CPUZ and GPUZ also get used a lot by producers, so the first sighting of parts are normally a lot earlier than you might think. The first dev kits for the next console generation cropped up in the middle of 2018.

The most official AMD stuff is rather vague but they do have published roadmaps or pictures of slides presented at conferences.

As a practical matter, AMD actually hit that APU target. The Vega 11 in the R5 2400G hits 1.7 TFlops of FP32.

Aaaah, the amazing % differences. God I wish people would stop using this idiocy. 5% slower on average. Converting that to framerate at 60fps is 3fps difference. The worst case scenario is -25% which is 45fps. Sure the worst case scenario is really off the charts, but is still 45fps which is still playable despite being an outliner just like DIRT4 is in Radeon's favor of +27%. Does that really make any kind of real difference? Not really. Especially given how Radeon low percentile is usually higher than NVIDIA (which wasn't the case years ago).

If you prefer Radeon over GeForce, Radeon 7 is a perfectly good card and as they sort drivers out, the gap will become slightly narrower. After all, Radeon 7 GPU is tweaked Vega which doesn't man slaming Vega drivers would result in peak performance. Especially given they introduced some extra caches in the render pipeline which might not work at its peak yet. So, few frames here and there are to be expected for sure. Just like how GeForce cards gain some after every brand new GPU release.

AMD Announced that the Radeon 7 will be supported with a Future Update with the Radeon PRO driver.

So that means that you can use the Radeon 7 for more professional work, with official support.
