Radeon 7- closer look including the cooling solution

We will still have to wait a couple more days for the performance numbers. But the embargo has lifted on the unboxing and physical review of AMD's new gaming flagship graphics card.

 

It's great to see that this is easily the best reference air cooling solution that AMD has ever provided. AMD has in the past (rightfully) taken criticism for skimping on the reference cooler designs, particularly the Hawaii launch. It seems like they have learned from their mistakes. Hopefully the days of stock blower coolers both from Nvidia and AMD are well and truly behind us.

 

The Reference Radeon 7 features

-3 fans reminiscent of most high end aftermarket cards, but rare on reference versions

-Easy disassembly (very important for people who want to attach water coolers or change the thermal interface)

-Cooler includes heatpipes and vapour chamber technology 

-Hitachi HM03 thermal pad is used atop the die housing the Vega 7nm and HMB stacks, rather than paste

 

The graphics card looks classy and very well built with good cooling for the GPU, HBM and the VRMs. This is going to help with keeping the noise levels down without letting the GPU throttle. It looks to be better designed and built than recent high end GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD. Performance is gonna be what matters most but it seems AMD have nailed the physical aspect of the card which was very important considering the price tag.

Interesting to see its thermals with graphite pad instead of thermal paste on the GPU.

No reason to repaste with a pad that should last forever and have a thermal conductivity that high nice

Why do I get the suspicion that AMD is pulling out all the stops on the cooler because the chip won’t perform well like the Vega cards?

And preventing throttling while staying quiet is a big deal. 

 

I still have my Sapphire r9 290 vapor x. It stays cool and quiet without throttling. Never could have achieved that with the Hawai reference blower cooler. If you turned the fans up enough to prevent throttling it was deafening.

The most interesting part of this release is the new thermal pad. I expect GN to come in with comparison information on solutions, but it'll be interesting to see if it removes the hot-spot problem. (The thermal pad should have very limited lateral heat transfer, which is likely why it was chosen.) I also find the cooling solution pretty interesting. I do have to wonder how the GPU would handle in one of those 2-slot Vertical Mounts that are pretty common in new cases. With the vertical exhaust orientation and hard 2-slot alignment, the GPU shouldn't be starved even when pretty close to the glass.

Yep I also still have my 290 but I swapped out the stock cooler as it really was unusable. So loud even at stock, has to drop power by -30% to get noise and temps down.

 

Sadly it's just been announced that stock it insanely low for this GPU. Most people won't be able to buy at all I imagine.

 

Vapour chamber in a really nice feature to see. Great that they put so much effort into cooling this time.

Looks pretty robust cooling solution especially for reference card. 

Good for no more blower cooler used. Heat pipes, vapor chamber design with 3 fans is so much better. 

Also amazed to see thermal graphite pad, that's awesome. I remember seeing that thing and it's thermal conductivity is amazing.

I really think what AMD is doing here is just saying "here, look everyone, we can make a high end graphics card just as fast as Nvidia's $700 RTX part". They know that high end Navi is not launching until 2020 and they just don't want high end folk to forget about them. For 2019 they at least want to be part of the conversation.

I dont think theyre RGB though (or in Sapphire's case static LED) if they were going to be a color, it would most likely be red (for obvious reasons) which a black fan wouldnt do as well to refract the light as a white or clear fan would. The bearings look large however given it's a 92mm roughly sized fan, so that could be a good indicator of lifespan.

What I found interesting about the card disassembly is that there appears to be space on the board for additional power delivery (looks like 4 rectifiers and chokes?)...  Not sure if this is because they are borrowing from the Instinct board layout but would be interesting to know what the current power delivery potential is versus what it could be.

One can only hope. GCN has been long in the tooth since 2015 with the Fury X.

Awesome, they used the Vapor Chamber for this, so there really is no point in Custom Solutions, wich would only cheap out on it.

And also a couple of (flat) Heatpipes...

 

Its really a good Cooler!

 

The Only thing to maybe improve is bigger fans. But that's it.
