Microsoft plans to expand Xbox Live to other platforms, including Nintendo Switch and mobile. The company says bringing the network to more consoles will "enable game developers to connect players between iOS, Android, and Switch in addition to Xbox and any game in the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs."

The move was teased in the description for an upcoming session at GDC, where the plans will presumably be revealed in more detail. The session, titled Xbox Live: Growing & Engaging Your Gaming Community Across iOS, Android, Switch, Xbox, and PC (Presented by Microsoft), will include details on the expansion, which Microsoft says will take Xbox Live to "over 2 billion devices with the release of our new cross-platform Xbox development kit."

While Microsoft lost in terms of hardware sales, they might just win in terms of services.  I hope this move will be a success because Xbox Live & PSN shouldn't have to be restricted to their hardware platform anymore.  I do wonder if there'll be fees involved to play online, but if I remember correctly, you don't have to pay to play Xbox Live games on Windows 10. And correct me if I'm wrong but no platform, other than Epic with Fortnite, is doing cross-platform service, right?

 

This may be unlikely, but I hope this also comes to Linux.

 

And I do wonder if Steam will ever come to Xbox, Switch & mobile.  That would be fun to see, especially since Steam supports Linux, and are working hard on making Linux a relevant gaming platform.

You don't have to care, but this could potentially increase competition in the gaming market, especially consoles & mobile.  Those 2 platforms don't usually have competing services, where iOS has Game Center, Android has Google Play Games, Xbox with Xbox Live, PlayStation with PSN, etc.

And like I said in my post, we might even see Steam show up on platforms outside of the PC.

Not sure about the details yet, as they will have an event in GDC 2019 about it but I don't think Xbox-exclusive games will be brought to other platforms (might've misunderstood your question).  The SDK that they'll be presenting is only for integrating Xbox Live SDK in games so that game devs can enable cross-play much easier, and making their achievements, social stuff, etc. available everywhere.

I'm all for this if it pushes more crossplay.

I thought it was pretty neat that I could play minecraft with my kids (me on pc, one kid on Switch and the other kid on the Xbox).  Would be great to see this style of crossplay come to more games.

A similar XBox App already is on Android.

Yeah, you think everything Microsoft/XBox does is neat and defend them for not beeing able to buy XBox360 Games  (haven't tested XBox Classic) Games with Prepaid Card on XBox One and PC.

Steam on Mobile makes no sense. They will mess up their Plattform. But there already is a Steam Mobile App - much like the PSN and XBox One.

Switch also doesn't make too much sense because the Hardware is too shitty. You probably won't be able to run Crysis on it. But some older stuff like Agarest, Final Fantasy 7-12 or so might be possible.

Remember that the Switch isn't much better than XBox 360 and PS3...

And you can also use that same argument on the PC & servers, although I do see your point on the flip-side because there isn't much a console can do to compete against each other other than the exclusives and their services

What I meant is offering stuff like their achievements, a service that competes against Google's own Google Play Games & iOS Game Center. Maybe even go as far as having a game store, like the upcoming Epic Games Store on Android.

Though I have a feeling they won't do the latter.

Yes, I know that Switch isn't as good as PS4 or Xbox One, but there are other games it can play that can potentially cross-play, such as fighting games & racing games.

Six axis and the touchpad were both horrible failures. The former never came to anything and the latter turned into a glorified pause button (which in fairness is actually pretty awesome).

 

And the Xbox controller really didn't need much done to it (just an improvement D-pad, which it got), it was already incredibly well liked. It was DS3 that really needed improvement, which it also got in the form of a bigger form factor.
