Death of the Lightning port

Belgarathian

Apple is reportedly testing an iPhone with USB-C instead of it's propriety Lightning connector.

I'd say it's a safe bet that the replacement iPhones coming will forgo the Lightning connector for USB-C given the move to USB-C for all other Apple devices. As a long-time Apple user, I'm excited for the move. There are a lot of great USB-C devices out there and since accessory manufacturers tend to follow Apple's lead it will hopefully lead to a wider range of USB-C accessories for all phones, computers, etc.

Now we just have to get them to update all their keyboards, mice, and other first party accessories to USB-C.

P.S While you're at it Apple, please give VRR 120hz screens

Amen! I would be down for a good universal standard. Probably still won't buy an iPhone anyway.

Well money aside (licensing fees for Lightning acessories), the reason they designed it was they wanted a port that was durable, thin, and user-friendly which USB-C mostly is.

They could also replace the fees earned off Lightning by locking devices that don't use their chipsets like the LAM2 chip for external audio processors in Lightning connector headphones which they could easily adapt to USB-C. However with the onset of BT 5.0 and 5.1, I don't see wired headphones continuing to be a thing for mobile applications (unless you're using a DAP).

I doubt they can achieve 120 Hz refresh rate with OLED, but someone correct me on this. I think it’s the reason why the 2017 and 2018 iPad Pros still use IPS  LCD in order to achieve a variable refresh rate.

Tbh I’m not a fan of OLED considering that the GS8 my friend owns is now suffering from screen burn in and I hope that for the iPad and Mac line, they’ll stick to IPS LCD.

If there’s one thing good about this is that you just buy dongles once. The MacBook dongle will then work with the iPhone. But I think Apple will now ship the iPhone charger with a USB C to USB C cable so people who have computers with USB A are now required to buy a dongle. :P

I'm not sure... To my knowledge it's not a restriction of OLED.

I was under the impression that the reason iPads aren't OLED yet is the cost of an OLED screen of that size. Probably not such a big deal running into 2020 as the cost has likely decreased significantly since they would have had those in development.

Moving to USB-C honestly feels like an eventuality for mobile devices. Easier standardization for users, higher bandwidth (through 3 gen 2 and higher implementations), dramatic increase in alternate mode flexibility.

Using lightning just doesnt have a good reason other than inertia. At least usb-A is dramatically more durable heh.

I don't like USB-C, would prefer lightning. The connection in my laptop to my charger is getting loose and its only been 2 years, but my phone and iPad, which are a little older, are fine with lightning. I'd much prefer faster speeds over lightning.

I'd be ok with a USB-C equipped XR 2: Electric Boogaloo

Though I do prefer the connection mechanism on lighting. Its near impossible for Lighting to lose its connection where as USB-C has been seen to wear out and become loose with age.

Magsafe was an extremely flimsy connector. It knocked off with any torque. It was also a dedicated port and was always on the left side of the machine. Its better that it's gone imo.

Just a little rant,

Nike is headquartered here, where I live in Oregon and they own a boat load of land. They have some stupid ass deal with our city and they don't have to pay taxes for all the goddamn land they own. My district could be a little less poor if Nike actually helped out a bit. Even Intel helps some, but it doesn't do too much.

I wonder why nvidia doesn't donate to my high school, bc Jensen graduated from my high school.. Wishful thinking ig

You don't understand Capitalism, because what mxk described isn't capitalism. Also, Oregon as a state is fairly left leaning.

You know I wouldn't have believed this at all, then the new iPad Pro comes out with a USB-C port... so it's very possible. Personally, it would be an annoying transition initially but in the end it would be for the best.

lmao you should hear how racist Oregon used to be.

There was legit a law saying that black people weren't allowed to come into the state, and the KKK had a huge base here in the 20th century.

Yeah, I suppose. My parents don't buy me phones, I usually have to pay for them myself. There's definitely a split in kids everywhere. I see people at my school get a new phone and airpods (ew) every year. I see literally no need to get a new phone every year, it's such a waste of money.

I have a Macbook from mid 2009 and have NEVER ONCE had my magsafe connector accidentally come unplugged, now the charger cable for my Pixel 2xl, that damn thing falls out almost daily while it sits on my night stand.

EDIT ***** I should point out I'm not saying some people didn't have problems with them, I'm saying I never ran into one, and I think calling it extremely flimsy is a drastic overstatement ******
