When will a gtx 970 no longer be suitible for 1080p high gaming at ~50fps?

BlockedTheShot

Even though i've upgraded to a 2070 and i have a 970 lying around unused, i'm just curious. When will the gtx 970 come to this point?

and i do realize the future is quite unpredictable

Damn....

It depends. On ultra or max setting in some games it allready suffers a bit.

Also the Vram is a bit of an issue at 3,5GB

Dude the 970 is amazing I used it in my old build for a long time and it did 70+ FPS battlefield 1 highest settings

Imo i think that the gtx 970 had good longevity and if you like the card that's great, but i started to see games recently where gtx 970 started to struggle (final fantasy 15, shadow of the tob raider) and now i'm seeing titles like anthem(recent beta tests) and Metro: Last light(at least from what the specifications look like) where the gtx 970 is showing signs of aging. That and I wanted to try out 1440p

Yeah, 1440p is a new level, and I sold the pc with the 970 8 months ago, I’m sure games have gotten larger since then :)

i kind of just upgraded my pc and swapped out the 970 as well as replaced the psu(replaced 500w white evga with a cooler master masterwatt 650w ) and put in ssd(it was actually lying around since black friday).

What have you got now?

Damn....

970 is a very capable card, great even for a budget 4K experience (High/30fps, more for older games, all game dependent) when overclocked. You'll struggle now with newer titles due to VRAM, especially with larger texture files. If you can upgrade now a 1070/2060 would be a good jump for Ultra/1080p60 gaming.

Well it won't be suitable for demanding AAA titles but it would be more than enough for the 95% of titles out there @1080p 40-60fps.

Now.

I consider 6gb vram the minimum for modern AAA games.

I must admit I don't like the GTX 970. I bought one to replace my GTX 680 4gb. It was not a good upgrade. It was replaced in 3 months with a 980.

Before the 680 4gb I used a 470, 570 and 670. I only got the 680 for the 4gb vram. All these cards met my expectations. The 970 did not.

I think the future is very predictable. It won't be long before 8gb vram is the new minimum. It is the main criticism of the RTX 2060 with 6.

You are in good shape with a 2070.

GTX970 3.5GB has its flaws.. Once great, now good.

But..

Medium or Low Textures now..although you Can go ham on other effects and processing.

It is what it is.. Vram limited but an ex-beast.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Still at 1080p all Ultra settings Far Cry 5 only get close to 3 gb. Unless HWinfo is wrong.

Farcry5 Memory usage and swapping isn't as bad as other games.

#Neveruse1GameasExample

Play Resident Evil 7 (Maxed Shadows+HBAO)

Or Resident Evil 2

Or Blackops 3 or 4 using MassivePrecaching.

TITANFALL 1+2 will precache using all Vram.

Any game that Will use close or past 4GB texturing o  a GTX970 will see excess stuttering upon using 3.8GB+ Vram.

RESIDENT Evil was the worst offender.

I've got a GTX970 on my desk, it's my old GPU.

I try most games..  As many as possible.

The newer games will make the GTX970 suffer.

eSports titles won't at all.
