Why would you get such a cheap processor???

Any C242 or C246 motherboard should be fine.

Try searching on SuperMicro, Asrock Rack, Gigabyte Server and ASUS.

Examples:

SuperMicro X11SC series

Gigabyte C246-WU4

Asrock Rack E3C242, E3C246 series

ASUS WS C246 PRO

Just get a cheap dual CPU LGA1366 server board for around $80-100 and then two X5675s for $60. DDR3 ECC server RAM is freaking cheap too so you can grab a bunch of that, then you just need a PSU, HDD, cheap case, and basic GPU as a display out.

Guys, if you don't know anything about servers, then don't give advice; instead, wait for someone else to reply and learn more to expand your own knowledge for next time. You're calling a 6/12 thread $300 xeon from Q3 2018 a cheap/bad processor? Its not only not bad, its probably way overkill for what OP needs.

OP, look into something like e5-2670 or a e5-2690 paired with a LGA 2011 socket motherboard. This will be more than enough performance than you need for a single server, and it will be WAY cheaper. The CPU will be way cheaper, the motherboard will be way cheaper, the RAM will be way cheaper, and server wise you probably won't even notice a difference. This is all hardware you'd have to buy used. You can even go a step further and get a dual socket 2011 motherboard and run TWO of these processors together and it would still cost less than buying a brand new xeon+board+RAM. I recommend an SSD as the main drive for the server as well, some servers really like/benefit from the speed. Just remember that if you go dual CPU you need a copy of windows server or windows pro (which can be found dirt cheap or free if you google...)

What exactly about a $300 brand new recently released 6/12 core xeon is cheap?

Rust server won't even use more than 1-2 cores.
