cooler master h500 or h500p mesh?

any suggestions on whether I should buy the h500 or the h500p mesh

I prefer the look of the h500p mesh, but I heard that the acrylic top panel can suffocate a AIO liquid cooler

You've heard right. The H500 with the acrylic kills the airflow. You want as much airflow as possible.

Isn't the H500M the full mesh one? That's probably what you want to pick up.

You're thinking about the front panel.

  • The H500's top is completely open at the top, but only supports a 240mm RAD max.
  • The H500P Mesh top has side vents and an acrylic top panel, can support up to a 280mm or 360mm RAD.
  • The H500m top is largely the same as the H500P mesh but with a glass top instead of acrylic.

In any case, the side vent exhaust will not suffocate the AIO cooler, but it WILL add resistance to fans they need to overcome which depending on the fans used might cause them to under perform or get loud. It's usually not a major issue unless you're doing heavy OC, to which I would say you should be mounting your rad in the front anyways for best cool airflow possible.
