CES AMD GPU and CPU releases. Thoughts?

Anyone a little disappointed with the new GPU? I was thinking £500, but since it matches 2080... I guess it will be down to how well they overclock.

 

CPU on the other hand looks very promising, it essentially matches 9900K at this point (not sure about single core but I think it will be up there)

 

I wonder what the price will be. I might switch from my 9900K to 3700 due to PCI-E Gen 4, although I'm not sure yet.

 

What do you guys think overall about AMD event?

The GPU cost is going to be due to it using HBM memory instead of GDDR. HBM is quite a bit more expensive. 

 

As far as the CPUs, its to early to tell, but does look promising since it basically matched the 9900k on Cinebench on an even core/thread count, so that shows promise that the IPC is matching or very very close.

Yeah, AMD is on a roll. If prices for Radeon VII will drop by even £100, it will make it well worth it.

I dont see the Radeon VII falling in price. Usually AMD sells its cards at little to no profit to get market share and suspect this likely is case again here.

Yeah, due to HBM2. No idea why they used that. I believe they wanted the bandwidth of 1TB/S

To capture both markets in one card?  Gamers and Developers, AI, etc?  Maybe no workstation variant?

I agree AMD currently has a hole from $400 to $700 where there are no consumer GPUs.

That probably is the case yeah. 16GB of VRAM not for gaming per say.

To say your graphics card has 1TB/S memory bandwidth is a feat. It's AMD trying to create a halo product and I see it working well for them to be honest. They may offer a variant with less HBM on it for a cheaper price. I don't think anyone was really anticipating AMD to go head to head with the 2080.

If they reduced VRAM to 8GB yea, price drops significantly and AMD wins more market, 'cause people will do anything for the cards in the stores.

I agree, slightly disappointed.  I am hoping that by mid year they release a mid-tier GPU using the 7NM tech.  Not everyone wants to spend over $500 for a GPU.  I personally would be will to drop $400 to $450 but can't justify the premium price for the Radion VII for my use case.

 

CPU wise, I am excited to see what it has when it gets closer, however I am a bit disappointed at the lack at information during the Keynote.

There will be more to come. As Lisa said, shortly in the future there would be more announcements about Navi and other 3000 series CPUs. We will see more 7nm midrage/low range cards guaranteed.

If it's around £400, it's gonna be a good deal vs 9900K. Although, 9900K might drop in prices also. BUT 3700 uses A LOT less power so it's colder... Hmm....

The card is like an i5 and i3. It's meant to be an accelerator but the 4 CU disabled means they can sell what normally would have been a loss. So they are making money off what would have been a loss anyways. That's why it uses HBM2.

Doesn't make any sense to ditch what you have for AMD for at least a year or two IMO. Waste of money.

AMD may still release other GPUs this year, especially since they can do 7nm GPUs.

If the AMD new GPU was 550$ this will destroy the 2070.
