An upgrade from i7 920

Hi people,

I've recently posted a question on reddit, but afterwards realized that folks here would likely give good advice as well.

The post was

" I ran into an odd situation in regards to my PC.

I have been using it for quite a while ( at least 5 years) with small upgrades here and there. That means that my CPU and motherboards are way out of date. However the CPU I use (Intel Core i7 920) still performs very well and doesn't feel like a bottle neck.

I recently wanted to get a new GPU (probably 1070 Ti) to replace my 1050 Ti, and perhaps dabble in VR.

I wouldn't even consider replacing the CPU if the motherboard would not have been having problems since the day I got it (didn't buy it). I got used to "double boot" during the years it's in my use, but I can't help but to think if something should be done about it. 1366 Is a very outdated socket, so it's hard to find a good motherboard for it, let alone one that would also be reasonably priced.

Any suggestions ? Am I worrying for no reason ?

Relevant PC specs:
Motherboard: ASRock X58 Extreme
CPU: Intel Core I7 920
GPU: 1050 TI
RAM: DDR3  12/16GB (It's complicated =D)
PSU: Corsair hx 620w
Storage: Samsung 860 250Gb/Western Digital WD Green WD10EARS 1TB "

It seems that I will have to do a mostly full upgrade after all. What should be a good starting off point ?

I didn't really have a budget for this, but I guess around 1000-1500€ (including the upgrade to 1070 Ti)  is feasible in my case, but obviously the less the better.

Also used market isn't too good of an option since I live in Finland.

Any suggestions or advice ?

a) What country are you in (effects pricing and such)

b) X58 isn't that outdated. I've still got a couple X58 rigs, selling one and planning to swap to another while I sell the rest of my stuff to upgrade to Zen 2 once it's actually released, they can still hold their own quite well. Though like you said finding good motherboards can be tricky. But if you do find one and OC something like an X5675 (usually $25-30USD) to 4.5Ghz it can challenge an R5 1600 and compete pretty damn well with an 8700K at 1440p with a 1080 Ti (I'm actually planning to run mine with a 1080 Ti and pick up a 1440p monitor while I wait so I'll be testing this myself) according to Tech Yes City, he's got a bunch of vids on the X58 platform and mostly the Xeons (and an i7.. 980 I think it is, it's the same as the Xeons just more expensive because of the i7 label).

Thanks for the suggestions.

As for Country, I live in Finland. Thanks for pointing out that I didn't mention it in the post. Changed that now.

So I've actually just upgraded my wifes pc from a i7 920 about a month ago. We went for a Ryzen 5 2600x (Due to the nuts pricing of Intel in the UK at the time) and it has completely unlocked the potential of her GTX970, she can now play all of her games at really good settings where as before it was seriously being held back.

Another thing to note is your Motherboard is only SATA2 so 3Gbit/s and probably wont be getting the full potential out of your SSD. She's over the moon with her upgrade but I'm sad to see what was once my old PC finally be decomissioned after 10 years of service. F
