Sayonara Tax

Canada EH

Now would be the best time to figure out how to leave without paying tax

Also it could be a marketing thing

"You get to dodge the sayonara tax if you fly with us.

Its paid within the price airlines, The new way for gimmicks"

Don't know if they still have it, but Australia when I was there in early 2000s had a leaving tax too. Can't remember how much it was, will ask my brother as he was the one living there for around 20 years.

Ahh found out, is waaaay more expensive than Japan's  https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/australian-departure-tax/

1) Not tech news.

2) 1000 yen is something like 9 dollars. I just booked a ~2 week trip to Japan and it will cost about 4000 dollars. I think I can spare another 9 dollars. Hell, picking which seat I wanted in the airplane was more than that.

3) Many countries have had, or does have a tax for leaving. Australia, Austria, China, Germany, Sweden, UK, and several others. The tax is included in the tickets.

4) While in Japan, tourists do not pay VAT/sales tax if you spend more than 5000 yen (46 dollars) at a single store/mall on a given day (if you show your passport). So tourism does not contribute nearly as much money to the Japanese public sector like it does in other countries.

Fewer then 24 hours, interesting. What about those layed over in the airport?

Those are not technically in Japan, or are they?

TBH I got more than 1000yen left on the train card when I got home as I forgot to withdraw the money back. That is a small cost compared to the entire trip. Sure, its money but if you are already paying over €2000 to spend 2 weeks there then thats nothing.

The only sovereign soil in a country are embassies.

Technically you havent "entered" Japan on a layover because you havent gone through customs.

Bit cheeky, what happens if you don’t pay it?

They deport you. Or... I dunno, arrest you and ship you to China.

Seems odd they'd implement it now since the Olympics are next year though...

Have already got an answer thanks. It’s included in the ticket.

I'm just wondering if Japan differentiates between business trips or not. I guess $10 isn't a big deal, but there's a pretty good possibility I might have to go there for a business trip.

Man that is expensive as fuck! Now I wont be going to Japan no more for my fresh tech!

Why bother anyway? Japan's not really any more advanced than in other equally developed nations for individual tech. What they're advanced in is technology serving the public.

Money grab, greed is real!

Someone has to pay for the all the stuff they're doing for the Olympics. May as well be the people who are visiting.

As long as you don't go through immigration, you've never entered the country. So if you really wanted to spend your 24+ hour layout in the airport, you could.

Pay for technology terminals to process visitors quicker, and more languages in the country. What about those people who prefer to pay cash only?

Perhaps those lineups will be empty?

The tax will likely be charged to your airfare.

Japan is nice to visit for about a week or two.

I prefer more idylic places with soft sandy beaches.

Japan has those. Look up Okinawa some time.

I don't see why they would because if it caught wind that you could avoid the tax by claiming to be there on business, everyone would just do it.

Mm, there's probably ways to prove you're there on business. Then again, we might just have them pay for it, so...

You don't know how our business is going.

Granted. I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying you don't know how our business is going. There's a reason we're going to Japan.

If it’s booked before the introduction, then it’s not included.

If you can not afford 1000 yen on a 20000+ yen trip, then there is a problem.
