Replacement NVME won't populate

I'm trying to install an upgraded NVME on an Asus ROG Laptop but the new drive won't populate when I try to boot the windows recovery drive. Asus won't touch it because it's an "upgrade." Does anybody have any ideas to troubleshoot this? The computer is an Asus ROG GL752V.
