i7 9700k Air or AIO cooler?

Constantin

Hi

I have the i7 9700k 4.9Ghz all cores on a "normal" air cooler push/pull 120cm.

I was playing Battlefield 5 and the temp was around 75c, anything above 70ish make me nervous

Is it worth to upgrade to the Corsair Hydro H80i v2 High Performance, will i see any difference?

here is a picture of the cooler i use now.

Thanks.

Nah that's alright, AS LONG AS that load (battlefield) is as high as you'll push it. If you like to say, calculate prime numbers in your spare time (running prime95), the temps might be an issue then. Otherwise, 75 is totally fine, as long as you're happy with the noise levels you have right now.

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Lol your temperatures would actually RISE with a H80i v2

Your temps are fine, but if you are feeling too bad about it the Dark Rock Pro 4 exists, go all in or don't go at all I'd say.

Also AiO's are usually worse in cooling performance, you need to spend the double you would on Air coolers to get 'similar' performance to begin with... Don't just think that because it uses water it's magically better.

The H80i is probably the most serious single rad of its size, it's very thick so it would offer better cooling, but not by much.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Duh obviously, it's a 120mm AiO those have a hard time beating the Hyper 212X already.

vs a random hyper212 clone looking cooler, probably not, no. but similar performance, likely.

I wouldn't buy 120mm AIOs unless that's the only thing that'll fit.

Simply think to yourself "am I happy with how loud my machine is right now? (cause cooling isn't an issue as long as you are only pushing the CPU as hard as you stated in your post)".

If you're happy, do nothing.

if not, consider a bigger/better air cooler, or a 240mm+ AIO, depending on personal preference. they both have their merits

is the photo just rotated or you actually put the case upside down?

if the photo is rotated then the top fan is wrong, it should be an exhaust not an intake

if the case is upside down I'd say it's worse than just having it "normal"

anyway it doesn't seems like the case has any usable front intake for the H80 so I'd stick with just air cooling

3 hours ago, Constantin said:

do you really mean that?!?

yes. the only possible mounting in that case seems to be top or rear, none of those work for a radiator because the fans would just be making hot air go through it, warming the coolant instead of, well, cooling it, making it perform like shit, don't get me wrong the H80 is a decent cooler but this kinda mounting

corsair-hydro-series-h80i-gt-high-perfor

is just for the looks, rad just over the VRMs and graphics card, bent tubes, fans blowing hot air from literally all of the components, if you wanted to do that you'd get a regular air cooler not this

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

Yes of course, but anything above ~70 makes me nervous..... :(

Better off buying a better air cooler. Dual tower is probably your best bet. AIOs don't become worth the investment unless it's a competitively priced (and good) 240mm rad or bigger.

You're fine. I wouldn't have put such a tiny cooler on a 9700K, but your temps aren't high enough to worry about. Like it was said above, mid 80s is when you should start worrying.

You're fine.

I'd actually argue it's never worth it. The best 240mm AIOs (technically they're all the same because almost all of them are sourced from Asetek) match the top tier air coolers like LGM, NHD15 etc. Only 360mm+ AIOs can beat the top tier air, but they're usually very expensive and are much, much louder for just a few degrees less.

And dual tower, single tower, actually doesn't really matter; the second fan brings almost no improvement in the way of temps.

You should really get around to replacing that PSU. It's very bad quality and put under heavy load constantly could damage your components or even blow up in your face.

Fair, but "most" I don't think is a fitting term. Cooler Master and I believe Deepcool don't use Asetek designs. Well, if they do, they clearly are different because there's a reason no one buys deepcool and Cooler Master AIOs actually perform worse. Noise on 6th gen pumps is no more than a fan, ask me how I know. With side panels on, I would argue the difference is negligible, especially when well over 3 in 4 people most likely do something that makes noise when on the computer, be it games, videos, or even typing. A side note - recent Intel CPUs are no good way to benchmark the quality of an AIO anyways, since the TIM or sTIM used has been so garbage and spotty.

You realize a fan has nothing to do with a tower right? I didn't say dual fan or push-pull, I said dual tower. As in dual fin stacks, dual heat pipes. Besides, any good cooler will come with good fans, that are likely quiet enough, and my earlier point about noise comes into effect here also. This is why I think "silent" PCs are somewhat redundant. Even electricity makes noise.

This is all ignoring the fact that the OP has one of the worst PSUs made by Corsair in recent years. The money should be spent there. Old green label units are fire hazards at best.

This might be the first instance I’ve seen “reverse” GPU sag.  Maybe I just haven’t seen enough upside down configurations in my life?

As others have said, go 240 or bigger if it can fit in your case.  Your current temps aren’t horrible so I wouldn’t say there’s a need for it but sometimes swapping out parts is just part of the fun.

air coolers work well, especially good ones. the h80 is similar to the nh-d15 and likely the dark rock.

most high end CPU coolers will perform within a few degrees of one another. the limiting factors becomes the rate heat transfer from the cpu to the cooler and the fact that more cooling surface cant make up for the ever decreasing delta in room temp vs cooler temp

My only good option in my case (to fit) is the H80I V2, should i go for it will i see that difference from the chart above?

If the H80i is the best performing option on that list that will fit in your case then it would be reasonable to expect an approximately 7deg C drop while overclocked and using a synthetic stress test, the above circumstances being the worst case temperature producing scenario, with lighter, less intense processing loads the temperature difference will not be as great.

Your temps are fine. If you want more headroom for oc'ing, the H80i V2 is a fine cooler but not very quiet.

The cooler you're currently using looks like a rebranded Gammaxx 400 which is a bit better than the 212x and the load temps in TechPowerUp's test is higher so you should expect a smaller difference in temps.

Depending on how much clearance you have for a cpu cooler, a large heatsink might also be viable.
