Summary:
Riding on the curtails of the IBM + Samsung Power Processor announcement, a Japanese news source has reported that Nvidia will be partnering with Samsung to manufacture it's 2020 GPUs.

Quotes/Excerpts:

Quote

A new report from a Japanese news source, [says] Nvidia will manufacture its 2020 GPUs using Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. IBM intends to build its 7nm Power processors on the same Samsung process. October, Samsung announced that it started risk production of 7nm EUV chips. The risk production seems to be ahead of schedule as it was initially scheduled to start early 2019. Nvidia is currently using TSMC’s 12nm process for its latest GPU cards. Nvidia may also feel that its position won’t be threatened that much if it sticks to 12nm in 2019. AMD's Navi GPU architecture is rumored to launch on TSMC’s 7nm process in 2019.  If AMD doesn’t have a 7nm high-end GPU planned for this year, then Nvidia has little reason to switch from the 12nm process at the high-end competition-wise. Samsung was the first company to bet on the EUV lithography process, and it looks like it will also be the one to reap the most benefits early on.

My Thoughts:
A surprise to be sure. Both Samsung and Nvidia are taking a chance at EUV process compared to TSMC's established 7nm process. Considering the continuously decreasing Nvidia stock, I'll be interested to see what all comes out of this announcement.

But wait Nvidia, what about the 3000 series?

Anyways, I hope this new RTX 4080 will be able to run games at a decent resolution with RTX turned on.

This is mostly about EUV going into Risk Production back in October, but the main detail to come from that is full testing samples will be out at the end of 2019. Nvidia & IBM are going to be the starting companies to join Samsung on this node.

Did nvidia say they were releasing any new gpus in 2019? We had Pascal for a long time so it wouldn't surprise me if they ended up waiting till 2020 to release their next line of gpus.

I would not be surprised if they launched a new series along the 2000 series. The 2000 series hasn't really gotten the best reception. And I doubt they are willing to produce as much 2000 series cards like they did pascal since that burned them pretty hard with the crypto crash.

They might do an early launch if amd can get their s*** together and bring a competitive 7nm gpu to the high end.

otherwise the 2080 and 2080ti will reign top dog for a long time me thinks

Placeholder GPU processors like binned 2070's, 1160's etc.  They will release something late 2019 for the consumer, not prosumer...my guess on this jump in serialization.

I don't think Nvidia is scared when it comes to the 2080ti/2080. Not many gamers buy those when you compare it to sales of say the 1060. If AMD begins consuming low/mid-high range then Nvidia would have reasons to be scared.

Looking at the 2020 GPUs, OP assumed that they were actually going to refresh in 2019 ?

Hard to tell tbh, Samsung electronics or at least Samsung in general is a multi faceted company. Besides weapons, electronics, shipbuilding, property maybe?

I don't think there's anything they're not  in.

GP108 and GP017 14nm for the GT1030 and GTX 1050/1050 Ti are done at Samsung. Rest of the Pascal lineup are TSMC 16nm.
