Huawei Foldable Phone

The Huawei foldable phone (see pic above) seems to be the most impressive so far. It will have 5G and a full 5-inch screen on the front (with a notch for facial ID recognition), as well as an almost bezelless 8-inch screen outside. Huawei’s CEO Ken Hu says it’s so powerful it will be able to “replace a PC”.

Thats an absolutely stunning display. If they can pull this off, I think it would take some feat of engineering. Its a real shame theres a stigma around Huawei products when they are putting out great phones like this. The Huawei phone will be announced in 2019, so theres still a long way to go. This is another way the 'notch' can be overcome, although a little annoying that you would still have to fold the phone over. This is still a concept and I just find it hard to believe at this point that its possible, but if so I'll be amazed. Can't wait to see this in action - maybe 2020?

Samsung Galaxy F or Galaxy Fold

The technology behind the upcoming Samsung foldable was announced in early November. The Infinity Flex display Samsung will be using for the Galaxy F (or Galaxy X) will expand to 7.3 inches and sport a resolution of 2152 x 1536 pixels. According to a Korean analyst report, the Galaxy Fold (as the report predicts it could be named) will cost $1,800 and sport a whopping gigantic mAh battery capacity and two 12-MP rear-facing cameras.

This is a bit more realistic. I like the idea of the small screen on the front, and maybe opening like a book, but when I want to pick up my phone, I don't want to need to open it. Thats just too small a display on the front. This would be a good niche phone for people who want the capability of a tablet, but don't want to carry around a laptop bag. It does look a lot more solid than the Huawei device, and I could see myself buying this a lot more. You can definitely expect to see this in 2019 (Although Tom says they are all expected in 2019 - the Huawei phone just looks so far ahead).

The world’s first foldable phone came on November 1. It isn’t as polished as Huawei or Samsung’s but, hey, the little Chinese David beat the two Goliaths to be first to market. Called the FlexPai, it has a 7.8-inch AMOLED screen with a 1920 x 1440 resolution and measures 7.5 x 5.3 x 0.3 inches.

The Flexpai has two cameras rated at 16 and 20 megapixels, and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

This phone looks a bit more nicer than the Samsung IMO. No small screen so you still get that phone experience, and just unfold the phone to go into tablet mode. Its a great looking phone with nice specs. Might not come cheap though compared to the Samsung or Huawei.

Another foldable coming out at MWC 2019, according to reliable rumormonger Ice Universe, is the one from LG. That phone may be the one that showed up in a recent patent uncovered by Letsgodigital. That phone, however, has two displays rather than a foldable one.

 

It’s hard to understand why LG would choose such a design when they are the undisputed leaders in flexible OLED technology, however, so I wouldn’t count on this being their bet against Samsung and Huawei.

Even if this isn't a foldable phone, it certainly looks good. I do miss the QWERTY keyboard phones, and this will still be great for multitasking. LG does have patents filed for their own foldable phone, but they don't have a solid concept just yet - just a nice looking hinge similar to this model.

And finally, there’s Apple. The Cupertino company is not talking about its foldable plans at all, but there’s no doubt they are working on exploring different designs, as this patent on hinge designs show.

Most likely, Tim Cook and Jony Ive will wait until Google, Samsung, Huawei, and company iron out all the many technological kinks. But perhaps, if the format takes off as these companies and the Westworld scriptwriters think it will, Apple may be left behind in the Next Big Thing.

With a refresh around the corner for the iPhone XI, the general tick-tock cycle, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple released it in 2019. I like the magnetic Fig 22 the best, with part 26 being just a hinge that will allow 180 degree rotation. 

General stuff you can expect to see in the iPhone XI:

- USB-C

- No notch - Apple will have a unique implementation, can't see them copying Samsung (lol, I would but not for this). 

- Better Camera and CPU the usual

- Maybe 3 cameras, but TBH they look like garbage and you don't need 3. 

- Dual front cameras. 

- Redesign - maybe this foldable concept?

 

There are some more foldable concepts on the page, but these ones are the cool ones with pictures and not just patents, apart from Apple. I would imagine a lot of them would be similar.

Seems dumb. All it takes is someone to sit on it and the screen will break on the bend

As an Axon M owner, I'm very excited for the future. If somebody stole my phone and I had to buy a new one, I'd go right out and get another Axon M. The extra real estate for running two apps side by side is amazing. I can't go back.

I'm only interested in folding screen tech if it's more resilient to cracking and damage than conventional screens.

I mean, you can't really game or video edit on a tablet.

Sure, the type of person that'll buy this tablet won't need that performance, but imo you can't really say something is powerful enough to replace a PC unless it really is.

Anyone else feels all this folding nonsense is about as useful as the notches? Or am I the only one? I can't seem to think of a single practical use. Even for tablets as it would be too big either dimension you get in the end.

 

Only meaningful application was the re-introduction of slider system on Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. Phone doesn't seem to be much thicker, they entirely eliminated the notch and has a practical use just like in the past where slider action answered or canceled the calls. Plus, sliding action is a great anti stress system. Anyone owning a slider phone or USB drive with retractable connector using button knows what I mean. :)

i can see this being useful, at least in the tablet space- so long as the phone / tablet / whathaveyou is thin, otherwise it would become quite bulky in your pocket and undoubtedly get smashed, jostled, and cracked- still a good idea though!

only one that looks like it would be useful is the Galaxy F, the Huawei fold out into a SQUARE, how is that even useful???? the flex pai looks like it would be bulky to hold when folded and the LG has a bezel in the middle which destroys the entire point of these for me

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

The issue is flexible screens cannot bend past a certain point. You will create excess pressure and it will either delaminate from the sides or break. Also there can't be glass on the screens so I bet it feels horrible to use and scratches easily
