9700k bottlenecking my 2080ti?

Go to solution Solved by DaMainMan,

Why not upgrade to 1440p?

In all honestly, a 2080ti is a horrible waste of money for 1080p. Upgrade the resolution and it will solve all issues :)

So, after getting curious about why my GPU never uses its fans, I did some looking into my task manager and found that my 9700k was sitting at 100%, and my 2080ti sitting at 0-8% usage.

I am however gaming in 1080p, maxed settings in all games that I play, minus AA, as its useless for what I need and doesn't really impact viewing from what I can notice. Now, what can I do to remove this bottleneck, but I don't want to upgrade anything if I don't have to, i can tweak any setting needed, but I would just like to know what to do to fix my pegged CPU.

Rig 1: i7-9700k OC'd to 5.0ghz all core | EVGA XC RTX 2080Ti | ADATA DDR4 2400mhz 4x8gb | ASUS PRIME Z370-P | Asetek 550LC 120mm | ADATA 480GB SSD & Toshiba P300 3TB | Cooler Master Masterbox MB500 | Win 10 Home | Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum, G502 Proteus Spectrum, G933 Artemis Spectrum Snow Wireless Limited Edition, Corsair MM300 Mouse Pad | 2 MSI Optix Curved 27" FHD Monitors

What game(s) it's affecting, and what mode you're using (windowed, borderless windowed, fullscreen) would be nice to know.

Quote me in replies so I see them.

its being used, i'm still getting 200+ fps in most games. but the temps of my CPU are undesirable (like 85+ C)

so the biggest problem is in overwatch. epic graphics, 100% render, fullscreen. it gets like 300fps, but the fps drops terribly when initiating a fight. like to 100fps because the immense change in chaos on the screen. then remains there until the fight ends. but with the 144hz monitor i have, it really messes with me as the constant fps changes.

I'm just going to put this here: you might want to check what clocks you are getting on that CPU - it might be that it's actually thermal throttling and that's why it's showing as 100% usage - the clock has dropped substantially, to the point, where it is bottlenecking the GPU

task manager shows 100% usage and 5.0Ghz as the clock speed... so i don't think that is the issue.

I mean you could return/sell your 2080ti and buy a 1080ti together a 144hz, 1440p monitor and be alot happer than with a totally one sided-OP system like you have now. I mean the 2080ti is even borderline for 1440p -> I think one should head towards 4k with that kind of power.

Yea that makes sense - I would just save up for a nice monitor in the future then (or sell your current ones). I'm sure your parents will understand :D

My system is 8700k with -100mV offset auto clock pinned to 4,3 gHz when all core used. I got 1080gtx standard clock and i get in overwatch maxxed out on 1080p between 115 and 160FPS and my Cpu overall load never really goes above 40% load. I don't know how much cores overwatch supports.

If your overall cpu load is permanent 100% then there is probably something wrong. Btw in other cases your cpu load can be 100% all the time but your cpu is still thermal throttling. Check your clock rates under fullload. Aida64 has stress tool for that and even show the percentage of cpu throttling.

What kind of cooler do you use, is it maybe incorrectly mounted? How much vcore do you have under load?

Test overwatch with standard clocks. I bet you minimum Fps will stay above 150FPS.

At least if you have not other unwanted software who cause your 100%cpuload, like virus or something.

Why do you overclock your cpu to 5,2 when you are not even aware of your vcore and you real temps under load?

I guess your cpu runs to hot on your current cpu settings.

I just checked my settings, i got the render scale on 150% and have constantly above 115FPS. On 100% I get between 175-230 FPS. But most of the time around 200fps. Like i said my 8,7k runs 4,3 gHz and temps stay below 70C on air cooling while gaming. So your CPU can't battleneck to 100FPS at 5,2gHz. There must be a problem and i guess it's thermal throttling.

My overall cpu load doesn't really change much between 100% and 150% render scale. On 100% it's around 50% on 150% it around 40%.

IIRC even a Hyper 212 Evo beats a 120mm AIO, I'd definetly get a much better cooler, no wonder your CPU is overheating. Can your case fit an NH-D15 or Dark Rock Pro4 and such?

The cooler should be fine and you can play any game even without overclock or at least slighter overclocking. 5,2gHz is probably to much for your cooler.

Edit: just tried 50% render scale getting 300fps rock solid, cpu still chilling under 55% overall load. So you might see the problem yourself with your cpu settings.

i dont think i can fit either of them but im not sure... i can always stick a 240, 280, or 360mm aio in it, as it has the space for one. i just didn't get one in the prebuilt.

IIRC even a Hyper 212 Evo beats a 120mm AIO, I'd definetly get a much better cooler, no wonder your CPU is overheating. Can your case fit an NH-D15 or Dark Rock Pro4 and such?

No, 212 Evo does not beat working 120mm AIO. However, it would beat 120mm AIO with dead pump :V
