Junk bin build: can a Core 2 Quad still work?

 Share

I have the following items in my junk bin:

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
  • 4x Kingston 2GB DDR2-800 UDIMM
  • R9 380
  • Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB
  • Toshiba 500GB HDD

Questions:

  • Will those parts make an acceptable maybe-not-so-gaming PC? Target game is SimCity 4.
  • Can it do 4K?
  • Is there a recommended motherboard for such a machine? Or what features should I look for when building the machine?

Looks like fun to experiment with, but I bet it won't work for your performance target.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k (won) - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Linux Proliant ML150 G6:

Dual Xeon X5560 - 24GB ECC DDR3 - GTX 750 TI - old Seagate 1.5TB HDD - dark mode Ubuntu (and Win7, cuz why not)

How many watts do I need? Seasonic Focus thread, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I don't see 4k being a possiblity with that set up but if you can get a decent overclock on that q9300 than you might get some decent 1080 gaming. I have an old dell t3400 with 4gb ddr2-667, a 750ti and a qx6850@3.8 and still play quite a few games and get decent fps

Is there any motherboard you would like to suggest? Or lt least some specific features I should look out for?

An OC motherboard and memory is a must if you're looking to improve performance.
