NAS connection to router/switch does it matter?

Hi all,

 

I currently have my NAS connected to the router which I can access via my wired pc. Now I was wondering, if I connect the NAS to a switch which is also connected to the pc, will the transfer speeds improve? I was thinking because maybe the files will be transfered via NAS -> switch -> pc instead of NAS -> router -> switch -> pc. Is this true or will it always be transfered via the router?

No it would go through the switch but I doubt it would change a lot. What speeds are you getting rn?

Hmm alright. The transfer speeds at the moment are max 6mb/s

Wow now that is shit. 

Typically over gigabit ethernet you should be looking at ~120mb/s

During copying of small files it might drop down to 6 but even then it's unlikely. What hardware are you reading from/writing to? 

 

Edit: maybe, for testing, can you try connecting both pc and NAS to the switch or both to the router?
