what budget gpu should I get?

Looking at building my kids a gaming computer. I'm looking at the Ryzen 5 2400G (w/ Vega) + a Gigabyte B450M. This will be my first build. I'm wondering what GPU I should get for under $100 (used is fine) I would like at least 4gb but don't really know how much I need to play today's games. Also only have a 500w evga psu. I've heard the Gigabyte B450M only supports crossfire not sli. So I guess it will be limited to AMD gpus. Any help would be appreciated.

You are only limited to AMD cards if you want two graphics cards in the PC (Which you absolutely don't need for a budget build or for a mid range build). The card model depends on what types of games you want it to be able to run.

The Ryzen 5 2400G has integrated Vega 11 graphics that do a pretty damn good job. Even games like Battlefield 5 are playable at 60fps, albeit on low settings. Personally, if I was getting this CPU I would roll with the integrated graphics for now and spend more on the GPU later. Maybe have your kids do some chores to earn or something.

If you're going to get a discrete gpu just get the Ryzen 5 2600. On newegg it's even $10 cheaper than the 2400G right now. You can easily get a used 1060 for around 100 bucks.

Just use the iGPU then, you don't need anything more powerful.

Dual graphics isn't a great upgrade. Better to just sell the old one and buy a single, more powerful card.

 

Stick to the integrated Vega graphics for now, should be WAY more than enough for Minecraft, Fortnite, WoW, etc.

Use the integrated graphics, save up like $200 and get a much better graphics card.

It makes no sense to buy a 2400G and then a 100$ entry and used GPU along side it.

As others have said, just use the integrated graphics for now and upgrade when you need to.

Ryzen 2400g has comes with integrated graphics which are quite good to play modern games at good FPS.

I will recommend you not to buy graphic card for 100 bucks has you will GPU like Radeon R7 which is not best fit for your build.

if you can stretch your budget to 200$ dollars then go with AMD Radeon RX 460 Windforce 4GB which is more suitable for your build.

I was thinking of using the 2400g for now and then upgrading it down the road. I've seen other say it will enhance the performance.

While getting 2 cards can improve performance in some games, it really doesn't make sense at the low end. Trust me, I have two AMD cards in crossfire and while it's not as big of a pain as everyone makes it out to be, there are a lot of little quirks that may require tweaking and tuning for games.

That's not how it works. Crossfiring two 4gb cards doesn't make it 8gb. 

 

Also, VRAM is not the fundamental measure of GPU performance. Just because there is an 8GB RX570 doesn't mean it performs similarly to a 8GB GTX 1080.

Thank you, see that's the info I needed. My question now is if I get a 4gb gpu will it be any advantage using it with the 2400g or should I just save for like a 1070ti and call it good? (If sli isn't supported in that board and crossfire won't give me any real advantage)

Yeah, I would just stick with the 2200G for now and then get a 1070ti or something later. Honestly, you might not even need an upgrade for a few years depending on what games your kids end up playing.

Fractal Designs Core 1000 mATX case (bought used for $24.99 on eBay)

500w EVGA 80 plus psu (bought like new for $28.50)

G.Skill Ripjawz DDR4 16gb 2400 Ram 4×4GB ($112 used on eBay)

 

M.2 used 120-128gb boot drive (not bought yet but I'm looking at spending $30-$35 based on eBay pricing, just a budget gaming pc so cheap enough to get another one if it fails would never use a used hard drive for a professional setting)

SSHD used 500gb (not bought but looking at spending about $35 on it for all there games. Maybe an SSD for cache if needed)

Ryzen 5 2400g New (haven't bought yet)

Gigabyte B450M motherboard

 

Plus 2 fans and any other accessories I might need.

 

Upgrades:

Another GPU down the road

Added storage

CPU cooler if I want to take on overclocking.

Why? new 240gb 2.5" SSDs are like $40... 2.5" or m.2 SATA has the same performance anyways.
