Adding GPU to Elitedesk 800 G3 SFF - best GPU possible?

Hi guys,

I have acquired an HP Elitedesk 800 G3 SFF that I want to use with our 4k TV. From factory it came with a (optional)  GTX 730. My version does not have this GPU.

I want to add a GPU to this computer and have been looking at GTX 1030 and GTX 1050(ti). What is the best GPU I can install in this desktop? The limitations are in the PSU. It has a maximum output 180w (180w on 12V). Its 80 Plus Platinum rated.  Even GTX 1030 "requires" 300w according to nVidia....

Do you think it would be possible to have a GTX 1050ti with this PSU, or should I go safe and use a GTX 1030?

BR

I would personally use a 1050, partially because of the low power and partially because the CPU is probably not amazing, so getting better and better graphics cards isn't gonna give as much gain. Also, the GT 1030 isn't even a GTX, so I wouldn't bother with it for gaming.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k (won) - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Linux Proliant ML150 G6:

Dual Xeon X5560 - 24GB ECC DDR3 - GTX 750 TI - old Seagate 1.5TB HDD - dark mode Ubuntu (and Win7, cuz why not)

How many watts do I need? Seasonic Focus thread, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Are you using the PC for gaming, or just media playback and consumption?

If just media, then get a GT 1030 or RX 550, whichever is cheaper.

If gaming, then get a GTX 1050.

Hi!
Thanks for the answers. The plan is to use it for light gaming (Sims 4) and media playback.

Its equipped with an i7 7700 so the CPU is pretty decent.

Do you think a GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 ti would be OK on the small PSU?

Oh... a 7700 could eat a decent amount of power. i would upgrade the PSU to a CX450 or something at the least, for like $30-50, to avoid killing hardware.
