Planes, Trains, and Telephones - Virgin Group to fund new US High Speed rail lines

My Thoughts:
The largest issue with train based transportation within the US is just how large it is. Large cities can be hours apart. At some point it's just more reasonable to take a 1 hour plane instead of a 3 hour train or 6 hour car ride. Regardless, I hope a private entity finally challenging AmTrak will get the US government's foot out of where the sun don't shine and finance or improve AmTrak more significantly.

If you factor in how much time it takes for you to get through security and get luggage after you land then the flight isn't really faster.

Train stations tend to be heart of cities, 30-60 min (depending on traffic) closer to your likely destination than the airport is. Also planes aren't becoming carbon neutral anytime soon, trains already can be where there is a source of carbon free electricity.

Definitly need someone to light a fire under AmTrak or give better options for rail travel.  The few times I actually rode trains over in Britain or areas that actually have good rail lines, the expercience is nicer than dealing with traffic.

 

Bad enough when I was California and wanted to go visit my cousin down in the Southern part of the State.  Guess what, it was cheaper and faster to drive the highway and interstate than taking the darn train (taking in the fact gas is not cheap in that State either).  Could see the company doing well if they manage a rail line in that State and price the tickets right.

Just a nutty gal living near the Gulf.

thats not the whole story tho, taking a plane has extra things you need to account for.

 

i regularly travel from Germany to Switzerland which by train takes me about 6h to get to my destination, the flight time is only 45 minutes but if i include all the others factors like getting to the airport, being there much earlier to not miss my flight, time for security checks and luggage related things and then again getting from the destination Airport to my destination the total time by plane comes out to be more than 5h if the flight is on time.

 

sure i save about an hour but for the flight im constantly on the move to do the next thing and only really have about an hour in the plane itself where i sit down while in the train im just sitting in my seat and watch a movie on my tablet as on my route the first time i need to switch trains is after around 3 hours.

Bullet train isn't that much slower than a plane and you can actually walk around and get things to eat and stuff

I'm all for train transport. I was in Europe again recently and I was amazed again how simple it is to get from once place to another without dealing with traffic or luggage checks (or overbooking!).

 

While measuring the time is still relevant I think the comfort and convenience of trains is a big pro. Planes are always just a bit too uncomfortable and driving sucks

At some point an hour plane trip makes no sense when driving to/from the airport is an additional hour, TSA takes 20 min, and boarding is 30-45 min before you take off. 

 

Nothing more frustrating than a forced short plane ride to me.  Not because I don't like flying but the entire "hurry up to wait" dynamic drives me crazy.

 

The 2-4 hour train rides are the sweet spot I think, where trains should be much cheaper, barely any more time than flying really (if at all), and ease of travel is just a nicer experience.

I recently had to travel down to Southampton to visit a friend, and we decided to fly down instead of getting the train because it was about a fifth of the price and was quite a bit quicker (especially since the day we decided to go down South Western decided to go on strike so we couldn't have got there anyway!)

 

In my experience, as long as you pick the right time for the flight it really doesn't take too long. For us, our flight was at 8pm, so we got to the airport at 6:30pm, got through security in literally 2 minutes (not even exaggerating, I even went through the metal detector with a smart watch on as I forgot to take it off and it didn't detect it). Our plane was delayed slightly, but we were still at our hotel by 10pm, so even if you include the time it took to get the Metro to the Airport (ironically from the train station), it still took just over half the time the train would have taken. And our tiny Flybe plane had more leg room than Standard Class on a LNER train and for a fraction of the price.

 

As much as I love getting the train (but only if I travel first class, I always seem to get ill when I travel standard), anywhere further than London I would much rather fly.

 

Then again, with all the security theatre that the US has, I think would rather just travel by train!

Admittedly I've never used UK train transport, but the TJV, S-Bahn (in a number of cities), and ICE trains I've used in continental europe were much nicer than the regional jets and flights I've done.

 

 

Like, to give you a really stupid US example. MKE (Milwaukee) to O'Hare (Chicago) is a common flight. It takes 57 min official air time (about 2.5 hours point to point with TSA and boarding times). DRIVING from MKE to O'Hare takes ~70-90 minutes depending on traffic.

 

Also regional jets in the US tend to be crappier than what I've seen internationally (surprise surprise).

Or even better, get goobermint out of business where they have no business being involved.  I'd love to see AmTrak get privatized, to compete in the open market on their own.  Maybe this will be a first step to getting there.
