Semiconductor Energy Laboratory creates new 8.3 inch 8K 60Hz OLED display as well as new 13.3" 8K 120Hz OLED display

AnandTech reports that Semiconductor Energy Laboratory has created and shown off 2 new 8K OLED displays. The new OLED displays are an 8.3" 8K 60Hz display and a 13.3" 8K 120Hz display.

 

As AnandTech notes, they use Crystalline Oxide and so they're likely not final designs and won't be in commercial products just yet.

 

Wow. 8K 120Hz on a laptop definitely sounds awesome but completely overkill and would probably cause a huge regression in battery life. Cool stuff.

The 8.3-inch display is 1062 PPI. For comparison, Sony's Z5 Premium with a 5.5-inch display and 4K resolution was 801 PPI. At 8.3-inches, it's a little big for a smartphone, so it will be interesting if that size can come down a little bit. 8K at 6.5-inches would be 1355 PPI, so the power draw would be quite interesting.

why not? because you'd have to look at the display with a magnifying glass to see the difference between a 4K 8.3" and an 8K 8.3"...

I do agree although I would prefer seeing higher refresh rate on phones and tablets rather than stupidly high resolutions. Although it might be fun to try to run the display off of 1 RTX 2080Ti and game on another 2 in SLI or 4 way XDMA CrossFire RX Vega 64 .

Yes please. But yeah probably overkill for such small devices. I get for VR in time though. I'm just more interested in monitors tgough. 

Also everything should be 120Hz at minimum now.

cool idea but the size is kinda small 27" is the smallest monitor 4k makes sense on I would like to see real 4k120Hz+ worked on more personally now that we have display port cables that can do 120-144Hz 4k data rate what connection is able to run this or are we going back to dual cables like the old days. 8k is going to look great at 50+"personally and I hope this high refresh rate transfers to TVs for once and we don't have that cheap motion blur 120Hz junk or the laughable "240Hz" claims.

That's because everyone is saying it wrong.

2K, 4K and 8K are the cinematograhic versions of, respectively, 1080p, 2160p and 4320p. 2K for example is 2048 pixel wide, making 4K and 8K names actually correct at 4096 and 8192 pixels of width. 

 

16:9 resolutions have progressively got more complicated names, from a simple HD to Full HD, Wide Quad HD, Ultra HD. From 5K on the  scheme has seemingly been dropped for a simpler "5K UHD" or "8K UHD"

So where are the android users bitching that 4k is not a thing on their phones? I mean sony released it 2 years ago and still everyone is content on 2k.

The point is the number of pixels at the maximum range.

About as much point as cramming 4K-ish displays into 5.5" devices at some retarded aspect ratios. I very much doubt anyone can see a difference between that and a proper 1920x1080 at standard 16:9 ratio without looking at some extreme cases of single letter in a single specific font showing a difference. Had Huawei Ascend P7 that was 1080p and I almost couldn't tell a difference when enabling its 720p mode. Now on Xiaomi Mi5 and can't think of a single reason how anything over 1080p would be beneficial. Other than bogging down CPU by making it compute things it shouldn't have to.
