Most I know don't run it for the ray tracing but for the higher 1440p or 4K performance.  Heck, there some still having cards with blown parts as is.  Just saw another 2080Ti getting a blown part a few days back on a different forum board.

Well, they have to release something to replace the 1050/1060 series cards unless they stupidly want to leave the mid range market completely to AMD, and it kinda makes sense to separate the cards with RT and Tensor cores, and mid range ones without those features. It makes sense for cards without RT to fall under a GTX line instead of RTX, and I guess the absence of Tensor cores also warrants 11XX instead of 20XX, but yeah, more numbers more confusing to some I guess.

Turing without RT stuff would be cheaper to make, so the can get the pricing down maybe more in line with what some around here were hoping for. Split between low and high end seems reasonable to me.

 

Given rumours about AMD's next GPU taking 3000 model numbers, nvidia should jump them to 4000... repeat until over 9000.

Yep, still staying on my used 1080Tis and used Titan X (Pascals) I bought 2nd hand.

I just cannot comprehend this rumour. Why not GTX2080Ti AND RTX2080Ti. The G and R are easily recognizeable but nooooo, that idea comes from that additional chromosome.

So the GTX 11 series will be RTX 20 series without the high-end models and without Ray Tracing.

Makes sense. You need a lot of power and "RT Cores" to handle Ray Tracing, which, is obviously not enough already on the RTX 2080 Ti, so having so few for the lower end models, will just means that this feature would be useless in games, or be so low resolution, that you are better off turning it off to enjoy better graphics.

 

As long as Nvidia doesn't release the GTX 1180 and 1180 Ti,they are fine, else it would be the death of the Ray Tracing feature, as no one would buy those cards. Already, AMD has no equivalent features, so if they never jump on board, it will be a hard sale, even if the implementation is easier than doing all the visual trickeries to emulate Ray Tracing  as we do today.

DXR has a fallback mode so you can still have some form of ray tracing, but it obviously won't use as many rays. So DXR may still be used, if but nobody else implements hardware ray tracing acceleration then this may as well end up being in the same fate as PhysX

Honestly I've got a feeling ray tracing on a GTX card would be horrific considering ray tracing on RTX cards isn't an amazing experience already.

It's all Turing designs, it's just they're branding it differently. There'll be no high-end parts without Tensor & RT cores. Those are actually for professional/server work, and they put enough FPUs to make them work in gaming. (Nvidia pays an extreme amount of money in Software Development.)

On one hand this statement seems right, on the other when I open the Nvidia Control Panel which looked exactly the same when I still used my old GTX 660 2GB back in the days and was exactly as unresponsive and laggy, I somehow highly doubt it... Especially looking at what AMD did with their drivers and keeps doing despite a lot lower R&D money and budgets overall etc.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, it all might make sense considering rumours of the RTX 2060 costing 400USD MSRP (and possibly 500USD for the Founders Edition) which should perform around a GTX 1070 but with 6Gigs of VRAM, so they'll release an entire lower-end lineup to fill the market gap there.

I'm much more supportive of AMD as a company, but even I've got to say the amount of hate thrown at nvidia for just the possibility of this rumor, where the product line segregation actually makes sense given the addition of several features on the current line over last gen, is absolutely dumbfounding and hilarious. Do better, people.

I was sarcastic there, this rumour seems so goddamn stupid that I'm actually starting to believe in it lol... Why not just call it a GTX 2000 series so it's a lot more clear that a particular card doesn't have raytracing features.

Sadly, you need to go a LOT further back on the Nvidia control panel. It's not really changed much since the mid-2000s. I don't know why. I also don't know why so many "first party" controller functions run so poorly. 

 

As for the branding, that's what it was going to be when the leaks hit AdoredTV's inbox. It seems Nvidia has decided to change things. After how badly the RTX launch event went, that doesn't surprise me.

I kind of disagree, it's not about AMD or Nvidia really. It's about the fact that at least over 90% of people won't know the differences between those different GPU lines and there will definitely be some bad purchases made because of the naming scheme alone...
