Will my i5 7400 bottleneck?

Ok so.. I'm planning to upgrade my gpu from a 1060 to either a 1080,1080ti or 2070 .. Will my i5 7400 bottleneck?

Chances are yes. What games do/will you play? Consider an i7 7700 from eBay.

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

It will bottleneck a little bit, maybe go for the 1080 that is the cheaper and a i7 7700? There is this site that has this 7 gen processors with those GPU in comparisson https://papahardware.net/comparative/gtx-1080-ti-fe-7+core-i5-7400-10-vs-gtx-1080-ti-fe-7+core-i7-7700-9.html

Will it cause a bottleneck? Probably in many cases. But will you still get a performance upgrade? Yes. And the questions after that are: will it still meet or exceed what you and do you think it's worth the cost?

 

And if you want something now, get something now.

Yes it will...low clocked 4c/4t cpu has seen its days

I use 4.3ghz 4770k which is quite significantly more cpu than you have and in many games even at 1440p it's choking me.

 

You'd be fine if your goal is 4k 60FPS...other than that CPU is no bueno

He can't drive a 2080 Ti or 1080 Ti with that pos cpu.  Best card for you is a used  980Ti .......
