Toshiba CPU Upgrade Help

Hi there all

I would like to find out if any of you can assist me on this issue. I have a Toshiba Satelite laptop (c850-f14s) that uses a Intel Celeron B830 (http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Mobile_Celeron_Dual-Core/B830.html) and I want to upgrade it to a Intel Core i5-2540M (http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2540M_(PGA).html). The thiing is the cpu fits and the laptop powers on but shut it self off after a few +-30min to an hour. The steps that I tried are as follows:

1. I had a look at the Temp of the CPU and it is not overheating the temp staus the same as the original CPU

2. I reapplied Thermal paste but no change

3. I had a look and cleaned out the CPU fan and heat sink no change

4. Unplugged the laptop from the power supply and still no change

5. Took the battary out but still no change

6. used other RAM still no change

7. Then I put the original CPU back and the laptop worked 100%

What could the issue be and how can I fix it or what alternative CPU can I use to upgrade my laptop. Would a BIOS update work?

NOTE: The i5 CPU comes from an old busted laptop that I have laying around.

Regards

Timothy Harcombe

You probably need to update your BIOS.

It probably shuts itself off because the CPU is running so hot that the system as a fail-safe shuts down. Laptops traditionally do not work with CPU upgrades as the cooling is usually built around the type of CPU it needs to cool. You put an i5 in a system that was running a Celeron, it was never built for that.

Best way to check is to download something like MSI Afterburner or OpenHardwareMontior and monitor your temps, if 30 min in you are hitting 100+ degrees then that is your answer. No amount of thermal paste or re/checking components will fix this issue.

There may be a Bios update as well but since you can run for 30 min I doubt that is the issue.

This seems like a more likely option to be honest.

I had a friend who tried something similar with an old HP laptop that had an AMD CPU, and yeah the system would shut down after a while because the CPU was too hot.

Hi there thanks for the replies on the issue I did use a hardware monitor the have a look at the temp and it runs between 50 degrees cels to 60 dergree cels like the original CPU. As I stated in my first point.

Very interesting, then my next guess is power draw limits, again you are using a CPU that is not meant to run in that specific laptop. If you want to be really keen I would put the old CPU back in and see if the issue happens with it.

It works fine with the old CPU I want to upgrade the cpu due to it been a celeron cpu.

I understand why you want to upgrade but it likely is not possible without issues, like I said originally, you are using a CPU that is not meant for the laptop in question.

I remember reading from somewhere that if you install a CPU that is not officially supported into your laptop, it will work for awhile but it will shutdown after some time. Could it be that?

Ryzen 5 3600 | Nvidia Quadro P400 | Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX | Klevv Bolt XR 2x8GB DDR4-3600 CL18

Acer Chromebook C720 @ GalliumOS

@Timothy Harcombe It is the Intel Management Engine Firmware (ME) shutting down the laptop after 30mins. You need ME support for that CPU.

You could post your problem on Win-raid.com and hopefully get someone to replace the ME firmware with a working version for that CPU to solve the problem.
