  • According to Microsoft, Windows 10 has “B,” “C,” and “D” updates, and each is released once per month.

    • These “quality updates” are smaller than “feature updates” like the October 2018 Update and 19H1 that are released once every six months, usually in the Spring and Fall.

  • B updates are the biggest, and come out on “Patch Tuesday”, the second Tuesday of the month.

    • B updates are the most important updates, featuring new security fixes.

    • They also contain previously released security fixes from prior B updates and previously released bug fixes from prior C and D updates.

  • Windows Update doesn’t automatically install C and D updates on most PCs.

    • However, it does when you “Check for Updates.”

  • According to a recent Microsoft blog post, this makes you a “seeker” who wants to test these updates before most Windows users get them.

  • After these updates have been “tested”, the bug fixes in these updates appear in the next B update. The C and D updates are basically a beta testing program for B updates taking place on stable PCs.

  • Microsoft has repeatedly said only “advanced users” should click the “Check for Updates” button, but that warning only appears in blog posts that only advanced users will read.

    • The standard Windows Update screen in Windows 10 provides no such warnings.

  • Those who recently had their files deleted by the faulty October update were users who click the ‘Check for Updates’ button..

  • A Chinese court has ordered a sales ban of select iPhone models in China for violating two patents of chipmaker Qualcomm Inc, though intellectual property lawyers said enforcement of the ban was likely still a distant threat.

    • The case is part of a global patent dispute between Apple and Qualcomm that includes dozens of lawsuits.

  • Apple said it’s filed a request for reconsideration with the court, the first step in a long appeal process

  • The Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court found Apple infringed two Qualcomm patents, and ordered an immediate ban on sales iPhone models from the 6S through the X.

  • China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are Apple’s third-largest market, accounting for about one-fifth (20%) of Apple’s $265.6 billion in sales in its most recent fiscal year.

    • “There is probably a political play here. Apple is a direct competitor to the biggest companies in China, whereas Qualcomm is a supplier,”

  • A panel of censors set up to vet mobile video games in China has assessed the first 20 titles it, refusing nine permission to go on sale.

    • developers of the other 11 have been told they have to make adjustments to remove "controversial content".

  • The authorities have voiced concerns about the violent nature of some titles as well as worries about the activity being addictive.

    • President Xi Jinping has also called for more to be done to tackle a rise in near-sightedness among the young - something that the country's ministry of education has linked to children playing video games at the cost of spending time on outdoor pastimes.

  • A Russian communications official has threatened to block Google in Russia unless it complies with a law banning certain websites.

  • Russia adopted a law in September requiring search engines to comply with the state registry of banned websites and omit the banned content from search results.

  • While the registry does contain websites promoting hate speech and self-harm it also includes websites blacklisted for explicitly political reasons, such as a Ukrainian news website.

Optane DIMM Latencies 30x Faster than Optane SSDs

Source 1: https://www.overclock3d.net/news/storage/intel_boasts_impressive_optane_dimm_latencies_almost_30x_faster_than_optane_ssds/1#.XBPYsYNwEhk.reddit

  • One of the key benefits of Optane is its low latency reads and writes, making it most beneficial to place Optane as close to the user's processor as possible.

  • This is why Intel wants to put their Optane memory onto DIMMs, giving their memory more direct access to a processor than any other non-volatile storage solution.

  • Intel has stated that their Optane DC SSDs have an average idle read latency of about 10,000 nanoseconds (10 microseconds), whereas their Optane memory DIMMs are expected to offer average read latencies of 350 nanoseconds.

    • This represents a 28.5x improvement in average read latencies

    • DRAM typically offers sub-100 nanosecond latencies.

  • Right now, Intel's Optane DIMMs require specialised hardware configurations to run correctly, hardware that is currently limited to enterprise-grade server platforms.

  • It is even possible that Optane could replace DRAM in many low-end configurations, where the increase performance of DRAM is not necessary, and the non-volatile nature could be beneficial.

Razer app uses your GPU to mine crypto… and keeps the coins

  • Razer has introduced SoftMiner, a desktop app that “utilizes the idle GPU processing power of gamers’ battle stations to solve complex blockchain-based puzzles on the back-end.”

  • Razer rewards the owner of the PC running the app with Razer Silver–  which can only be used to buy digital goods from Razer.

    • “Razer Silver is not a cryptocurrency, it is a loyalty rewards program,” - Razer SoftMiner FAQ.

    • “We work with crypto mining technology to harness your computer’s GPU. In turn, we award you with Silver, giving you access to Razer’s ecosystem and suite of rewards.”

Apple-made modems coming to iPhone?

Source 2: https://www.cultofmac.com/595942/apple-modem-team/

  • After switching from Qualcomm modems to Intel modems, Apple is reportedly now looking to build more wireless chips on its own.

  • Apple posted a job listing seeking a cellular modem systems architect. The person hired will provide a key role working on “modem systems architecture aspects for the L1/physical layer”.

    • Such a chip probably would take at least three years to come to fruition

  • Former Intel modem executive Bernd Adler, who joined Apple in 2015, has reportedly been tapped as one of the executives to lead the Apple modem project.

Intel launching H270 Rebrand to free up 14nm space

Source 1: NelizMastr https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1008145-intel-launching-h270-rebrand-called-b365-due-to-14nm-production-problems/

Source 2: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-b365-chipset-specs,38235.html

  • In September Intel released the H310C chipset, which was a downgrade of the existing 14nm H310 chipset back to the 22nm process node.

  • As Intel’s 14nm struggles continue, they’ve now launched the new B365 chipset.

    • It's basically the B360 chipset purportedly produced under the 22nm manufacturing process with the Kaby Lake Platform Controller Hub (PCH).

      • other 300-series chipsets are based on the Coffee Lake PCH

  • While Intel produces the H310C chipsets on its own 22nm process node, it's unknown whether Intel will also manufacture the B365 chipset or outsource it to a third-party foundry

  • the B365 chipset

    • supports up to 20 PCIe lanes, whereas the B360 chipset maxes out at 12.

    • brings two more USB ports and support for RAID configurations

    • Does not support integrated wireless networking or USB 3.1, unlike B360.

I have a question for Luke, why are you using windows 8.1 embedded, and do you like it? i'm currently on ltsb but considering moving back to 8.1 or possibly 7, but i am unsure if it is worth it or not. Windows has evolved into a sprawling jungle and I am uncertain the best way to avoid stepping into $&!#.
