Upgrade - any ideas what i should do?

MR_moon2025
Go to solution Solved by DailyProcrastinator,

Look at a used GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti, that will be a big performance gain, that 950 is holding back your CPU.

so i am thinking that i will upgrade my pc this is my current build

CPU

Intel Core i7-4780

Motherboard

Asus H81m-K

RAM

16GB DDR3

GPU

Asus GeForce GTX 950 Mini

so what i was thinking is should i upgrade my cpu (which means my motherboard and ram) or my gpu?

i was going to get a i7-9700k, or should i get a gtx 1080 ti?

you should definetely go for a 1080ti, you will be surprised how well the cpu handles it. i have an i7-4820k(which i dont OC) and a 1080 and it runs fine with about 70 % usage on the cpu in even the most intensive games, so an rtx 2080ti would probably be bottlenecked but a 1080ti will be absolutely fine with cpu usage not going over 90 %.

Ah ok

Wasn't think of getting an rtx as they are the first for the 20 series and i feel they can improve on them

What monitor resolution/refresh rate?

If it's only 60hz your CPU is still fine for gaming.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Then what's your budget?

Should buy a 1080p 144hz display or a 4k 60hz with a new GPU

Before anything, I would honestly first upgrade the motherboard.

If he's gonna go graphics card and won't be able to upgrade to a new system in near future, then I'd get the motherboard first.

There is 0 reason to change the motherboard

The mobo isn't that important. Most motherboards from several years ago are good for anything as long as they have the correct chipset. His 4820K already runs fine on it and all motherboards meet the 75-watt PCIe standard, so it's not that important.

It's not the OP who has a 4820K, he has a 4780 (has to be 4790).

I could argue a lot of things here, but I won't. If the OP didn't run into issues, I suppose it's ok. But H81 is still a barebone chipset on it's own and is missing some important features. Hence my why the upgrade if he won't upgrade the CPU for some time if he goes out on the GPU.

There's no point in wasting any money on it, as that money is better spent on switching to a modern platform

Most likely AM4 for the best value.

Hence my comment that it depends on when he plans to upgrade. Now that I look at it, I didn't even realize those board are that expensive now. It seems like yesterday we were on 2 digit chipsets.
